I just got my car back from the paint shop and I am happily putting it all back together. I had the dash out for the paint work and after putting it back in, noticed that my heater light in the speedo is on when the key is on, even though the heater switch is off. Interestingly, when I turn the headlights on the heater light goes out. I didn't remove the wires from the back of either the headlight or heater switch when I removed the dash and both seem to be wired correctly. The heater works fine with the fan switch and the headlights work fine with the headlight switch, it's just the annoying heater light in the speedo that's the problem. Anyone seen this before?

Without looking at a wiring diagram I would guess that while moving the forty year old wiring around you may have broken the insulation on the ground path wire from the light. Try moving the wires when the light is on to see if it goes out.
Or the opposite, could be on the feed(pos) side if the light grounds at the speedo through the light socket assemble. But I doubt that.
Old wiring so be gentle.
Otherwise one needs a wiring diagram to see what is supposed to turn the light on.
Solved.

Turns out the wiring on the speedo was crossed. The fan light and the speedo backlight were crossed. Guess this fits under check your work before you spend hours trying to find the shorted wire in a 45 year old wiring harness. Frustrating that it was that easy, but at least it solved.

Thanks for all the help.
