The Southern AZ Pantera Club, and our sister club, the Fun Italian Automobiles of Tucson (F.I.A.T. Club) held a limited engagement picnic, with a trip to Madera Canyon, south of Tucson, and then a high speed run across the desert to a fantastic, historical mission (San Xavier del Bac - "The White Dove of the Desert").

It was another great run, with a great bunch of people.

We covered some ground, and had a great picnic. The group size had to be limited due to the parking availability at Madera Canyon - it is relatively congested up there.

More pictures will shortly follow.

Participants included:

  • Chuck and Linda - '73 Pantera "L"
  • Larry and Jan - '64 Cunningham C-4R Continuation Car*
  • Stephen - '74 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce Iniezione 2000
  • Dave and Shelly - '82 Fiat 2000 (Fiat 124)

    * The #5 Cunningham continuation car!

It's Chrysler-powered, Weber-inducted, with a cool oil cooler!! This one is the first continuation car (built by Briggs Cunningham), and is car #5 in a series of only 7 total Cunninghams ever built!

    The Ultimate American Sportscar

In 1952, the Cunningham C-4R was released in both coupe and roadster configurations. Powered by the original Chrysler 331 Hemi V-8, the 400 horsepower car weighed 2400 pounds. It would be ten years before another American sports car could challenge the C-4R for performance. That car, the Shelby Cobra, now an American performance icon, was directly inspired by the Cunningham C-4R.

Carroll Shelby knew about Cunningham when he introduced the Cobra. In 1952, Shelby was driving for Aston Martin at Le Mans against the C-4R and lost to them. Shelby even copied Cunningham's paint scheme, which was white cars with two blue racing stripes, which Shelby reversed.

Legend has it that the only car that was able to surpass the Cunningham C-4R was the DeTomaso Pantera, and the world had to wait until 1970 (and beyond) for that to happen.....

Anyway - more pictures to follow, as I get more organized.

I am having troubles linking images from the new "Google Photos" into other applications.

So if you would like to relive our adventures, you can look at the photos directly at the Google Photo's site, here.

NOTE: I shamelessly borrowed 9 great images from my buddy Dave, and included them in my album. I hope he doesn't mind....

Here's a cool picture of the Saint that you can wiggle for blessings. I did, and I didn't have any problems with my car on the way back!
