Most weekdays I cannot log onto the forums from my day job, this has nothing to do with the forums, it is copmpletely dependent upon how much bandwidth is being used on my employer's network. As other's have mentioned, I can log onto other web sites successfully, but the forums will time out before a connection is made. This problem has come & gone over the last few years. My employer will connect a lot of new equipemnt onto the network until problems arsise (I cannot log onto the forums for example). Afterwards they make bandwidth improvements to the network and the problem goes away. Then the network begins to slow down again as they continue to expand how much data they are loading up on the network. The main culprit are surveillance cameras. Multiple cameras are being installed at every facility.

I normally have no trouble logging on from the PI offices. However ....

If we don't turn the computers off every night, leave them running overnight instead, on the second or third day they will begin navigating the internet more slowly, and at times we cannot log onto the forums and other web sites too. Opening up that task manager reveals all sorts of bogus programs running. If we turn the computers off, let them sit a few minutes, and then reboot, all is OK and they perform 100% up to normal speed. What is happening is that various internet sites, software manufacturers, etc are all raping the computers for data. You can hear the hard drives running very fast, the power supply fans are going full speed. Yet we are not using the computers at all. This happens mostly in the very early morning, when yours truly is up working on the club or magazine. Its best to turn your computers off each evening, it avoids a whole lot of unwelcome invasions that are timed to occur when eveyone is asleep.

Another culprit that slows the computers at the PI offices down is the Norton protection software. Things will slow down, I'll hear the hard drive running hard, I'll open up the task manager and find the Norton program busy at work, probably sharing my computer data with the home office.

It is also a good idea to occasionaly delete the temp files. There are temp files of every site you ever visited. This makes for thousands of useless files pileing up on your hard drive. Just go to internet tools and delete just the temp files. It may take several minutes if you have never done it before. It does help your computer as far as access to the hard disc.
I do not use MS IE, it is targeted by every virus writing loser in the world.
1) I recommend Mozilla Firefox as a browser, it's free, installs easily, uses minimal disk space.
Not all websites will work perfect with Firefox but I would estimate 98% do work fine, including this site.
2) I dumped Norton years ago, to much background activity. I recommend Zone Alarm fire wall suite, it includes virus scan and spyware scans.
Since Zone Alarms NO problems.
If your hard drive runs, data is being exchanged somewhere and if your not causing it you have a problem.
3) Also need this, Fix-it Utilities Prof., this will remove unnecessary programs running in the background that uses RAM which is used for running applications. It will correct a host of other problem areas that slow computers.
I hope this helps.
