Aftermarket steering wheels, got one?

MacMan, I agonized for quite a while before picking a steering wheel for my '72--a Momo "Race" that required a adapter that cost almost as much as the wheel itself. Wheel is very comfortable and looks like it belongs in the cockpit of the beast, IMHO.

So many options. Depends on the look you are after. Pretty much ANY wheel will look better than the stock original (IMHO). I decided to choose the LeCarra because I wanted to maintain consistency with the 70's retro look interior, which I feel the LeCarra does. It comes with the hub (or without, if you want) which is needed. Once the stock wheel (has permanently attached hub) is off, any new wheel requires a hub. Some guys go for the quick-remove hubs for that extra anti-theft security. Most Pantera vendors sell these wheels and I think you can order directly from LeCarra as well. I was lucky enough to meet Ron McCall at Carlisle and he offered me his old (almost new) one at a great deal—thanks again, Ron!

You guys know I love to post pics, This wheel was designed for an early Capri. I bought it off Ebay. I don't know the manufacture. Like a lot of Pantera parts....somthing elese wii fit. This time it is the early Capri splines are the same. I must admit there is about a 1/2 gap between the back of the wheel and the coloum.

I have a LaCarra and Hub ( LIKE NEW ) for Sale, Was on my car for a short time. I went to a Momo Wheel and Quick Rel. Hub.

Is the adaptor specific to the Pantera? Just wondering what I should look for.

Yes,,, I think so. Some fit better than others, I had one Quick Rel. Hub and it did not fit right. Get one that is "made" for the Pantera,,, Save time and money

Wilkinson Pantera has a bad ass Quick Rel Hub for sale, Very very nice ,,, made for the Momo Wheel. I have one on my car. Not cheap,, Wilkinson = $$$. I think it was like $500. or $600.

Here's my Momo steering wheel, I don't know which model it is. The button in the middle has a DeTomaso symbol, the flash makes it hard to see.

JK, That was one of the reasons I went with a steering wheel with aluminum-colored spokes--to break up the black of the interior. Here's another view...

I need to get me a smaller diameter wheel so my knees have somewhere to go without rubbing on the wheel that way.

Cyboman, It's the Momo "Race" model, product ID RCE35BK1B. It's a 13.8 inches/350mm diameter wheel with a retail price of $230; I paid $189 (including shipping) via eBay. I searched high and low for a hub adapter and finally found one with the detomaso logo at Wilkinson's for $133 (including shipping). It fit perfect and was, alledgedly, one of the last five or six in existence. I believe late model Panteras came with Momo steering wheels and the hub adapter was, at one time, a factory part. Can anyone comfirm?

Funny, even a steering wheel can be one of those personal taste things. Ron likes the anodized aluminum spokes of his steering whell because it "breaks up" the black of the interior.

I like the fully padded black cover of my streering wheel because it "ties" the steering wheel in with my black interior better! LOL I find the covered spokes giving the wheel an oem look, imparting the interior with more of an upscale appearance.

Yeah, Personal tastes are, well, personal, but I think most of us can agree that detomaso could have done better than the stock Capri-type wheel. Or maybe not...

I think that wheel works well because of the Pantera's black interior. It doesn't clash like it would with another color.

And it's not just the look I like, Josh. I like the comfortable feel of the thick rim (compare to the stock wheel) and thumb rests. It works for me!

"I" agree with you, the oem wheel looked, er... well...inexpensive. How's that for being PC?

But to someone who likes a fresh off the showroom floor, concours perfect stock looking car, the oem wheel will be NIRVANA.

the thing I'm blown away by is the lack of choices for aftermarket steering wheels. You have GT Grant, LaCarra, and Momo, and that's about it. A lot of the wheels offered by those companies look very similar. And while they do have some decent looking wheels, none of them are overly impressive to me. Most of them are the same style/designs that I saw as a young kid. Not much has changed.

Still not sure what direction I'll go. If I find something soon, I'll post it. hehe Thanks guys! Keep em comin.

Thanks for sharing the info! Some people need to have 'exclusive' items. It seems reasonably priced.

My '86 5-S came stock with a Momo Prototipo steering wheel. I don't have a good picture of mine, but here's one anyway.

Not a great picture, but an amazing steering wheel. Small, feels great, easy to see through, lots of roon for my knees, easy to crawl under to get under the dash ...and just $129 Canadian!

What brand is your steering wheel? The flat bottom is really practical in a Pantera.

Wheel is Sparco. I think it is the "Ring" model - available in suede or leather. While looking at Sparco seats and belts, I found a great special on this wheel at a local dealer.

No adapter needed. My 6 hole model was a simple two minute swap.

Looks like a comfortable wheel. The flat side is not a bad idea for those who need the knee room, but I imagine most early Panteras will need an adapter if replacing a stock wheel.
