My engine when rebuilt has a cleanup bore and they put a high end street cam and headers on the car. I bought it that way.
I have a 74L.

Since owning the car since last October there has been a high rpm bog/cutout. It would crap out at around 3500 rpm and then when I let up on the throttle it would want to surge forward again.

I found the problem today when I removed the air filter from the stock air cleaner. I left the lid off and drove the car. It screamed like never before. I could easily get it up to 5,500 rpm with not cuttin out at all.
I put the lid back on without the filter to see if it was the filter or air inlets that were the problem. I still ran great but I think it was not getting enough air at about 5k rpm.
I want to keep the stock air cleaner setup if possible and definatly want to keep the engine cover in place if I go with an after market setup.
I don't really need the expense of a K & N air cleaner but have not ruled it out either.
If you have something that works for you, please give me names and part numbers if possible.
Thanks a bunch,
Mike # 6328

Check to make sure the vacuum operated air valve on the L/H side of the air cleaner is working. It's designed to let extra air into the air cleaner under heavy acceleration. Also check to make sure that the air cleaner top is not (or hasn't been) tightened down too tight. I say this because I found when I bought mine, someone had tightened the lid down too far & it was preventing the choke from opening all the way. Mine resulted in a rich mixture, loosening the hold down nut cured all. Good luck!

I will probably go with both the K $ N filter plus the Extreme Filter Top if I can get one that is the same OD as my lid. That will be the problem.
Everything on the air cleaner is working as it should and the wing nut goes on only a couple of threads to hold it.
I still think that with the cam it just isn't getting enough air.
I will try and get the proper size K & N first and see what that does. Anyone have the correct K & N filter replacement number? I found two conflicting numbers when looking it up.

Check with Summit Racing Wink. They carry the K & N filters in universal sizes according to height and diameter, just measure yours and order. I went to an K & N filter (2 1/4 by 14 inch) with a drop base for my holly and I also bought the K & N "X-stream" lid. This setup sucks like carzy, and it fits under my stock engine screen...good luck...Pappy
I am currently researching K & N Air Filter possibilities.
I have a 74L with Motorcraft 4 bbl carb. The stock Air cleaner has the
snorkel as well as the vacuum extra air inlet. They both seem to be in the
open position ALL the time. I checked.

It had an air filter that measured 11.5" X 12.25" OD. I dropped a 14 inch
filter in and it seemed to fit better so I think the previous owner had the
wrong filter in.
Not certain if a 14" alone will solve my air starvation problem.

The stock lid measures 17" across.
Am I wrong in thinking that I could go with a 2.25 X 14" K & N filter with a

14 " Top Extreme filter? That would put the Extreme lid filter directly
over the 14" filter and leave approx 1.5 inches open but still outside the
regular filter.
That would look odd at close inspection but be very functional for maximum
air flow. It will all fit under the engine shroud that almost completely
covers the air cleaner.
I rarely drive the car in the rain (only if caught in the stuff).

I need correct K & N Part numbers for these if anyone has them.
I did look at Summit and the K & N sites and have not found a 2.25 X 14.
I did fins a 2.31 X 14 though. Wonder if that will work?
Thanks, Mike # 6328 ... Looking for air in all the wrong places...
Wink: I responded to your mail on the forum but I think I am having a problem getting thru, so here is the K&N part #
KNN-E-3740 price is $43.95 from Summit Racing. I just purchased one in early Feb.
I am unable to use it because of the same problem your having. I'm using a big block Corvette 2" drop base plate and the 2.25" filter dosen't allow a free flow of air. If you would like to try it, its yours. contact me at jbrubaker351@charter.net for arrangments.
