I have a 72 pre l. The previous owner replaced the amp guage with a SW. I purchased a used OE guage from a Pantera vender and installed it as shown in technical sections. I did not use the shunt that was on the SW guage. Now, the needle jumps wildly except when at idle. What did I do wrong and any suggestions?

You didnt do anything wrong. The stock gauge is labeled as 75 amp but it aint. More like 30 amp. It reacts wildly to the oscillating voltage regulator. This is the reason people use the shunts.

I'd lose that "firestarter" and install a voltmeter!
