Watched the auction on TV but didn't see the Pantera on stage, although TV coverage was limited. Now I see this one below was no reserve, but didn't seem to have a sale price ("avaliable"). We all know Barrett Jackson isn't the place for our cars, but I was wondering about sales price anyway especially since I have some photos of that car from way back when it was built. All other cars show selling price...we must be so special Big Grin

You gave up a Boss9 for $9000?!?!

At top example at the height of the US economy went for 600K! Makes even the profit that can be made on a goose in recent times look pedestrian.

Well yes, but it was 29 years ago, 1985. Wait I need to take off my shoes and socks to count right.

I seem to recall it was Grabber blue and came with a spare transmission and one and a half spare engines. A spare 2x4 intake.

Not one of my smarter decisions considering where things have gone. Wink

...maybe it was a '70?
yep I agree it was butchered I saw it and watched it go over the block. the car was a far cry from the original article that was done on the car show car paint jobs just don't last and the interior was amateurish the exhaust pipes or should I say chrome cans looked stupid. 44k plus buyers fees and taxes, etc. but maybe the new buyer will put it back to its more desirable pushbutton specs fixing the deck lid (cut out for carb)will be a challenge
I'm in agreement that the car was a mess. The quality of work (especially the interior), even from the Popular Hot Rodding gallery, looks like crap. It is cars that are customized like that which make people think the Pantera is a kit car or something to be avoided. Worse is that a sale like that just gets recorded as a Pantera sold at $45K (or whatever it was). Too bad a big tent didn't fall on it and crush it before the auction.

I saw this car in person. Very amateurish build for sure -- and the interior was starting to unwind. It had fiberglass flares and an engine compartment that was well worn. I shouldn't talk as I am customizing my own car so I'm sure I'll have to eat my own words someday, but one man's dream is usually only that.....ouch, I know..... The car just did not show well under the BJ tent.

Now the 1967 Ford Mustang called KONA that the Ring Brothers built was quite a car. I crawled all over that thing from top to bottom. Exquisite details abounded all over that car. It was lot number 1356.1 and the hammer price was $135,000. With sales commission, it sold for $148,500. Lots of value there. The consigner told me it was the best driving custom he has ever driven. It was a fuel injected Rousch 402 with a 4 speed automatic. Again, just a gorgeous car. Glad I didn't have a bidder's paddle or I might have this thing -- and the wife would be REALLY pissed......

About 3 years ago, I attended Barrett Jackson auction when it debuted at the Orange County Fair Grounds. It was Saturday afternoon/evening, and while I expected it to be mobbed, the hall was empty, and spectacular cars were being given away including an absolutely incredible Daytona Coupe recreation that was perfect in every way. It was a stunning revelation for me. Not sure why BJ Auctions aren't more successful.

I agree, I was at OC too and talked to the owner of a white Group 4 that I saw in Palm Springs auction that bid to about $60K and didn't sell due to the reserve, then a few months later saw it at OC BJ go for about $24k with no reserve...ouch. First year in OC was bad for sellers I think because it was new, but next year it was real packed and good for sellers (unfortunately that was when I brought my bidding paddle and not the first year). Buyers caught on one year too late.
the Barrett Jackson auction has a lot of hype going for it in Scottsdale when the venue is in other cities less hype better deals on cars you might be able to buy. other auctions in the phx. area have less desirable cars daily drivers , etc. but Barrett has the batmobiles and the circus like crowd that attracts (fools with more money than brains)so its fun to look at these cars but really $85,000 for a camero? with a paint job and wide tires?

Totally agree on the 'market' side of your comments; though I didn't see the car, I'll take your word on that. Though its kinda cool that the Pantera was the original 'resto mod' (before that was a common term), the mutations over the years have clearly kept it - and us - from seeing a deserved market-appreciation bounce. I mean, if you look at any other factory hybrids: Cobras, Italias, Iso Grifos, Bizzarinis, Apollos, even the now coveted Sunbeam Tiger, you see rather significant jumps.

High quality cars, even those modded with 'respect' shown to the marque, will be what pulls Panteras out of the funk. I am seeing more cars in the $60k ranges these days, and even just 'upped' the insurance on my own for the first time in 8 years. I actually sold the Ford GT, and Ferrari Boxer BBi since I feel a little weird driving a mid-6-figure car in my town PLUS the insurance got kinda wacky for the amount of miles driven.

I'll state right here that if/when the Pantera does the same, I'll still keep it. It is my sentimental favorite, always has been.
Even if Pantera prices rise substantially, there is still a fair bit of general public awareness of the cars and where they sat in the pecking order (when introduced) — as an exotic that normal people might actually be able to afford. I really doubt they will ever be perceived as a car driven by a bunch of snooty rich types. They get lots of love, but still too little respect. Regardless, I'm hoping to keep mine until I can no longer drive.

I do find it odd that many comparable (that can always be argued) cars have increased much more percentage-wise than Panteras but, like Adams, I don't really want to be seen as driving an uber-expensive car. Never did.

I was at Barrett Jackson and it's amazing how first impressions make an imprint on people. I was taking a look at the car and if I heard it once I heard it at least twice -- ".....that's a Pantera, they are known to overheat....." Once they earned that reputation from the first cars that didn't have the blank off plate mounted internally correctly -- it's amazing how these first cars tainted all the rest -- even though all is good now. Sad story -- but it's probably why these cars have not been "discovered" yet. I think they will -- at least maybe in my lifetime?

Cheers,

Mark
Hey all, I'm the person that bought the 71 pushbutton from the BJ auction. Yup, it's not the car for you purists out there, but it's a dream come true for me at the price I paid. I seriously thought I would never have a chance at owning a Pantera so I was happy to be there at the right time to swoop in and pick it up for such a good price. And the majority of you are right...it wasn't a Pantera crowd (good for me Smiler). So, now I've started my car history search and I'm finding lots of great information thanks to this forum and the links you've provided. If anyone has any other helpful information to offer, I'd be much obliged.

thanks,
Marcie
Totally AWESONE!!
And Good for you. Wolfgirl, you will find this forum a wealth of information and full of good hearted people willing to help.
Congrats on the Pantera and as you begin to personalize the car you will find everything from best wheel sizes to most popular mods for cooling, to cheap power improvements.
Welcome to the forum, the pantera party party
Thank you all so much for the warm welcome ! The car hasn't even arrived yet here in CT, but I've already got "the grin". I can't stop smiling I am so excited about finally owning a Pantera. I saw my first one back in 71 and have been in love with them ever since (yes Joe, 50+ and counting). I'm looking forward to tapping into all of your expertise and experience. When it gets here I'll be sure to post updated pictures. Unfortunately, I might be taking them in the snow. Time to move south Smiler.

Glad to be part of your forum,

Marcie
Congratulations Marcie,

You did get a lot of car for the money. There is a huge amount of expertise on this board and everyone here is extremely helpful when and if you run into any issues. There are a lot of great vendors out there too, so making any changes you want should be easy to do. Good luck getting the car settled into your garage and we look forward to seeing photos and hearing more from you.

I love the blue color on the car and the roots blower probably gives that car quite the presence as it drives by. Enjoy your new ride Smiler
I remember the car when Dr Dan from Arizona owned the car. It was extremely fast and had the largest Exhaust tips I have ever seen! The one thing to remember about our cars, is the thing I love the most, that we tend to make them our own. You most likely would not do that with a Ferrari, but with a Pantera you can. And while I might not like some things that guys do to their cars, I love watching them look proudly at them!
Congrats on your new purchase and enjoy your car!
