bleeding the cooling system

HAve leak, flow and pressure tested radiator. All OK. Supply tank pressure tested and releases at 15 lbs. Replaced thermostat as engine rebuilder had incorect one in. Have gone for Jacks idea of the 5/8th frost plug in the bipass, as having trouble here in NZ getting correct one. jacked up both front and rear in vering orders to bleed air out of rad and supply tank.
THE TROUBLE STARTS when the thermostat opens steam and a bit of water come out of supply cap. temp gauge reads about 160 170
then the fog appears. temp sender in block .
Q. Is this just more air purging and the cap cant handle the extra pressure and the water can,t escape to the expantion tank fast enough.Or do I have bigger troubles. As a side the water in the rad is bearly warm at this stage.

Some engines are real pains to get all the air out. Guys have drilled & tapped the rear of the cylinder heads for radiator bleed screws to purge trapped air from 351Cs. It normally takes a day or so for air to coalesce and come out. WE've had good luck with the LIsle water-adding funnel on the Pantera. This $25 accessory allows one to start the engine with the rad-cap off & the funnel in its place, holding 1/2 gallon extra water. When the thermostat opens, most of the 1/2 gallon extra will disappear inside the block. Its slow adding if you must do this by pouring water from a pail in the surge tank, but eventually it can be done. Keep at it-.

I have a cobra with a 351C which Ijust put a new water pump on today. At steady speed the temperature goes from 185 to 220 in just a few seconds and back down. I think you guys have hit the nail on the head and I have a large air bubble somewhere. The Lisle funnel you refered to sounds interesting. Where can I buy or locate one ??

The Lisle #22150 funnel assembly can be ordered from any good tool dealer, if they'll take the time. It was $22.95, full-sucker-price. I wrote a test description in the Oct 2001 POCA newsletter. A few months later, Chuck Engles bought one and gave us a verification of its worth. Basically, it allows one to purge the air from a Pantera cooling system without jacking the thing up or other gyrations. I donated one to Nor-Cal for their Tech Sessions & kept the other.
