One set of instructions says put it through the radiator fins... Another says put it in the incoming hose and clamp it under the rubber hose. I like the latter. Any opinions?

Bill, I recommend neither, get yourself a M22 x 1.5 male with 3/8 npt female center and a 3/8 npt thermocouple that will be direct in the radiator. This is what I have and linked it to a variable on/off thermostatic switch for the fans.
Thanks Ron! Julian, I already have the thermo bulb and I tried to see if it would fit a 1/4 inch brass ferrel connector but the bulb is too small. I would prefer to install it that way too. I'll try 1/8 today BTW NAPA part number for the m22x1.5 oil pan plug BK 704-1048. I made aluminum clips to hold the 220 sucker on the radiator so I did not have to run the ty raps through the $500 core. Sure is a nice package... Bill
