I have just read the article in the latest edition of PI by Mr. Taphorn, my question is where within the system are the temp sensors placed. My Pantera has the oil temp sensor located on the oil pan just below the front main bearing and the coolant temp sensor on the block near the thermostat. I understand the system John describes where is a lot of modifications. I question the placement of the sensors because he does not mention them in the article. I would think the placement to be a critial point of the system and of understanding for everyone.

I believe the article says he put the water temp sensor in the unused threaded boss on the water pump - it is an unused heater hose outlet only due to his heater core supply modifications. I assume, bad thing to do, he put the oil temp sensor in a threaded boss actually in his aftermarket oil pan - most have a provision for such.

I don't usually visit this forum; however, another member informed me of your post. As Larry points out, my oil temp sender is in the oil pan and the water temp sender is in the water pump. I haven't seen the final article; so, I do not know if the water temp sender info was edited out. In the article, I mention relocating it further from the bypass and raising the sender temp to 190 to allow more heat in the coolant. The car was running too cool. In the water pump, the water temp sensor sees the temp of coolant just prior to entering the block. I would have preferred a location just aft of the radiator or even in the radiator's return tank. However, the oriface was already present on the water pump and not in those other locations and I saw no disadvantage using it. I suppose one could argue the water pump is an ideal location as it is closest to the actual temp that the coolant quenches the block. Honestly, I would go through no extra effort to reproduce that location.
Thanks to both replies; my concern/question is with the sensors in the locations available are we seeing good indicators of the real condition of the oil temp, water temp ? If so then what John has in the oil heat exchanger is a viable method for the pantera owner to keep the oil temp in check. I have read the article now 4 times and will want to make the modification, my Pantera has a dual pass radiator so what will be the impact? Thanks again.
FWIW, as for installing the water temp sensor in the water pump heater hose boss, I am a little uneasy about that since that area seems sensitive to cavitation, and a mix of water & bubbles will not give a true temp reading. If cavitation occurs, it will likely be at higher rpms, so since our Cleveland temp woes are usually at low speeds, maybe this is a needless fear. But if I was to do this, I'd certainly find a location away from the pump impeller.
For clarity, I am using the Miloden HV water pump. The inlet side that normally has the heater hose attached now has a hose from the Fill Tank connected to it. Thus, the Fill tank with the pressure cap is on the low pressure side of the system. The Miloden water pump has an additional threaded oriface that exists to accommodate a sensor. I have run the car at reasonably high RPMs on a race track and under extreme sustained high RPM highway conditions and noticed no erratic temp readings. Perhaps the design of the area around the threaded oriface in the pump contributes to this condition. A picture of the pump was in the article I submited. It shows the location of the traditional heater inlet and the location of the sender. The sender is actually in a relatively isolated channel from the impellor obscured by the flashing that separates it from the block bypass channel.
