72GTS,
I went to a modern one wire (130amp?) alternator from a '95 Mustang years ago. Bronx Ignition on Blondell Ave. just over the Throgs Neck/Whitestone Bridges is where I got it from, all wired and ready to go. It eliminated a lot of back and forth wiring.
I stayed with the remote starter solenoid just in case I needed to jump it in an emergency. I also wanted to be able to access it with a remote starter button when working on the engine.
You should consider going with a voltmeter, rather than the stock ammeter to eliminate the possibility of a fire. All of the electrical current runs through the ammeter. See other threads in this forum about this topic.
