Delorean used a Peugeot-Renault-Volvo (PRV) V6. Delorean was assembled in Ireland. Great concept, just did not live up to the expectation.

I know it is not a car, but the Mustang P51 that was made in America had a Rolls Royce Merlin V12 in it. That is the only one that I can think of that is American made with a foreign designed engine.

Careful note: some of the cars with foreign motors were actually foregn cars : Euro Capri, Courier, Festiva, Aspire...

I do know for a fact though that some North American car components have been made offshore for much longer than one would think. Wink
The early Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizons (1978?) had Peugeot engines in them. Might not be the first cars to do so, but like Denis says, probably happens way more often than you'd think.

A huge number of Ford, GM, Saturn, Eagle (especially and ironically) etc. cars use(d) foreign engines. I suspect that some Hondas and Toyotas have more US content than some "American" cars do now. Look at the Chrysler Crossfire which is essentially a Mercedes SLK re-bodied. Or the VW Routan which is actually a Chrysler minivan. It's a world market and has been for a long while.

Ford owns a significant holding in Mazda, many vehicles wearing a Ford badge have been built on Mazda platforms. The original Ford Courier mini-pick-up was a re-badged Mazda pick-up.

Remember the sporty XR4Ti of the '80s? It was from Ford of Germany. Ford also has plants in England and Australia. One of Ford's 1.6 liter in-line 4 cylinder motors, the "1.6 Kent" was manufactured in Kent England.

Ford's little economy cars like the Fiesta, Escort, Festiva and Focus are world cars, assembled in many places around the world, wherever they are sold. For instance, Ford's economy car of the '70s, the Fiesta, is still in production; it has been built in Europe, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, China, India and South Africa, but never the US. The Fiesta was an import here! The Festiva was originally a Mazda design, but production of that car shifted to KIA (Korean), another US import wearing a Ford badge.
