Sounds like a steal! The last time I saw one for sale was in a British mag. and they were asking 250.000 Sterling.
The 'bible' on de Tomaso's call it:..."it is just about the most unique object a De Tomaso collector can own. No one knows with certainty how many were built...." -
I was told in Italy that they built 48 at Fissore, and only the prototype was bult in Ally. The spyder prototype also in Ally. weighing only 1056lbs., going into production in 1965 with glassFibre bodies; advanced centre-spine chassis (like Chapmans Lotuses and like de Tomasos's F1 racer.)-all independant suspension with discs all round and as always, the most beutiful Campagnolo mag. wheels.
I bought one in 1968 and drove it everywhere for 5 years including two trips from Rome to London and back. I luckely had not read the de Tomaso 'Bible' yet, so was unaware of the suposed reliablity problems. I had a London Tuning shop 'tweak up' the Kent Ford motor and played aural tunes all the way to Rome on the side-draft Webers. A trip I will remember for ever.
Buy it. INMHOP It is the most beautiful car in the world.
Cheers tai
The Vallelunga has sold to a German enthusiast who works for the Toyota F-1 team. He intends to complete the car, not return it to stock. This will be one wild car. Weight of 1,200 pounds with about 400 horsepower. The first installment of the story will be in the Winter 2003 issue of PI. Follow our exclusive build-up of this rare car at the hands of a technically gifted owner is well versed in F-1 technology. It will make a good read!
