I am looking for the best 425-450 HP engine, with reliability I can find for $7500.00.
I have a 351C that produces over 340 HP and only has 2700 miles since a complete rebuild. It may have a flat cam. I have made up my mind to keep the Pantera, and I want a lot more acceleration-not really interested in top speed. Gary Hall has several that will meet the need. Has anyone bought an engine from Gary. I could also put Yates or the C302 B heads on my existing engine. Chuck, Jack, Marlin, Mike, Mark- any comments. Help!

HELLO LAR! THESE TWO ENGINES JUST MENTIONED LOOK LIKE SOME "KILLER" TORQUE! THE 514 SOUNDS IMMENSE! IMAGINE WHAT THAT WOULD "PULL" LIKE IN 5TH GEAR. THE P.I. 427 WOULD BE A RARE BREED AND NOSTALGIC, "FORD 427". I BELEIVE IT IS BASED ON THE 351 WINDSER. I'VE ALWAYS LIKED THE CLEVELAND (351) I WONDER IF YOU CAN GET AN ALL ALUMINUM BLOCK TO GO WITH THOSE ALUMINUM HEADS? CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW MUCH WEIGHT COULD BE "CUT" OUT OF THE REAR END? I KNOW ONE CAN OBTAIN A 302 BLOCK IN ALUMINUM ALONG WITH THE HEADS, BUT I JUST WOULD NOT LIKE TO SEE THE SMALLER SIZE IN MY ENGINE BAY. FOR MY MONEY, FOR 450 HORSEPOWER, I WOULD STROKE AND BORE OUT YOUR 351 CLEVELAND TO 427.(4 OR 2 BOLT MAINS) GO FULLY ROLLERIZED, HUGE EXHAUST, AND TOP IT WITH THE MOST EXOTIC INDUCTION I COULD FIND. EITHER FUEL INJECTION, WEBERS, OR MAYBE DUAL QUADS! ALTHOUGH NITROS WORKS VERY WELL, AND I PERSONALLY HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED IT, THE BOTTLES ONLY LAST FOR 120 SECONDS.(10- 12 SECOND RUNS), AND THEN IT'S TIME TO GO FILL IT UP AGAIN. WE USED TO SAY "BOTTLES ARE FOR BABIES!" TURBOS ARE HEAVY, TAKE A LOT OF ROOM AND MAKE A LOT OF HEAT, AND LAG. SUPERCHARGING IS HEAVY AND THERE JUST IS'NT ROOM FOR IT WITHOUT "CUTTING". HALL HAS ONE NICELY BUILT ENGINE FOR AROUND $4000. I DON'T KNOW IF IT PUTS OUT 450 HP? SOUNDS LIKE A FUN PROJECT! I JUST RECENTLY PICKED UP A 351 CLEVELAND 4 BOLT BLOCK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING TOGETHER ONE PIECE AT A TIME. THE CRANK IS A STANDARD STROKE. I MAY OR MAY NOT GO WITH IT. ANYWAY THAT'S ALL I KNOW. GOOD-LUCK TO YOU! REGARDS, MARLIN.
Thanks guys, I appreciate your responses. I spoke with Gary Hall this morning and he has a package that puts out approximately 450 HP. I'm going to take the car to him shortly and have some suspension work done and maybe I can afford the other engine as well. Proformance also has a deal involving Blue Thunder parts with a more agressive cam and solid lifters. Marlin, I always liked the sound of the solids rattling around, and I could always drive up to Manteca and have you supervise me adjusting them.

Thanks again, I keep you all posted.

Joe Fontana is still around, selling aluminum-block Fontana-Clevelands. The block, 4-bolt main caps and front cover is right around $4000. Wt savings are about 40 lbs unless you add alloy heads for another 60 lbs lost. These blocks will easily take 4.125" bores and a 4" stroke, for 427". They are popular for Ford-powered ditr-track sprint cars, where they are allowed 441 inches; the blocks have been shown to be reliable at around 800 hp on alcohol in this type of racing. But Joe says he has more running around in GT-350 Mustangs and Panteras than in sprint cars. Keep in mind that with ANY big-inch engines in a Pantera, you effectively have a ZF 4-speed as 1st is useless due to the torque available. Unless you re-gear the ring & pinion....but you won't do all this for $7500; maybe 2x that price if you do all the work.
