"Barely legal" ??? It's either legal or it's not... This write up just shows that it's the creeping intent of many to to portray anything traditionally American as unnecessary, outdated and dangerous. You just have to be smarter than the car in this case or the dog, the gun, the food, the street bike or whatever else is the pseudo chic target of the day. I'll say one thing... the dumbing down of America is working like a freakin' charm...
This is just another stab at freedom loving Americans. If I want to buy an 840 hp car and I have the money I should be free to do so. Americans are allowing the media and the government to take their freedoms, every day a little at a time. All in the name of public safety. I am tired of our nanny state. The automotive press that wrote this article should be banned by all us car guys. This is just more propaganda that we don't need.

I live in California and I know our state government would like nothing more than to ban our smog spewing old cars and crush them. Right now they are working on taking away our 2nd Amendment and next will be our old cars.

Sorry if this strikes a nerve with some, but this is how I feel.
How about this... I was chatting w two 20 year old guys... I said "when I was 20, you could haul ass down the road drinking one open beer, smoking a cigarette, with a hand gun on the dash and with an unrestrained child jumping up and down on the seat"... Perfectly legal. Try that now and the swat team will show up. I don't smoke or drink, but it makes the point. I know all you guys have seen trucks with rifles hanging in the back window, teachers use to "ask" the students to put the guns behind the seat in the high school parking lot.

Late last year I went over to Thunderhill for a weekend race and you could literally not see your hand in front your face for smoke. The farmers were burning rice stubble prior to the next crop and yet CA want to target classic cars, which for the most part are usually well maintained and driven few miles.

It really gets my hackles up when we get such hypocrisy in government.

Julian
Julian, The irony of this is the farmers are exempt from all this.

When we build new buildings and we are grading we have to put up a sign notifying the public that if you see any dust coming from this site they are to call (SAQMD) South Coast Air Quality Management District. Most likely a fine will ensue. Farmers on the other hand can plow fields and create so much dust it impedes traffic.

Farmers can also water all they want and then sell their goods as they please. Meanwhile my lawn only gets water twice a week and I have to take a 3 minute shower.

There are days when we are not allowed to burn wood in our fire places. Subject to a $50 fine.

I can go on and on.......
