does anyone know the part # for the sankao rotary ac compressor and bracket used when replacing the old york style? any better ideas on a different compressor? r12 substitute? thanks! rob...
About the only alternative to R-12 approved for use is R-134a. It is non-ozone depleting. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with materials used for sealing (O-rings, gaskets, etc) in R-12 systems.
From what I've learned from a Pantera Guy who did it is, the main reason for changing to a rotary compressor is to reduce vibration. I understand that the original York compressor is nearly bullet-proof, and parts are very inexpensive, should a bullet get into it.
Whether it's a York or a roatry compressor, you'll have to rebuild it, before you can change over from 'Freon 12' to 'refrigerant 134a' beause, as Husker said, the two are incompatable.
I bought a York compressor on eBay for $50 that had been converted, because I plan to do that update myself, and didn't want to have to rebuild my R-12 original compressor, what with limited tools and skills.
A guy on this BB has been advertising an extra bracket for a Rotary Compressor Bracket for quite some time. Just post a reply here sometime soon or e-mail me and I'll tell him to contact you or forward your message. His e-mail address has changed recently due to spam e-mail, so I'll connect you two up.
I don't get to even use my Pantera often enough to have used the A/C at all, ever, yet, so 'I haven't noticed any vibration' since my A/C has always been off. Once I get all the reliability issues sorted out, and I can drive it more frequently, then I'll do the R-12 to R-134a change over, then maybe try and rebuild the old compressor just for fun, to see if I can do it myself.
Pantera East's part number is PE7022 BRACKET AC ADAPER Z-PLATE STEEL (SANKYO) 79.95 PE7012 COMPRESSOR ROTARY 7-CYL "O-RING" R134A 259.95 Marino's number is 727-381-1151
