Alterntor smoke?

Are you SURE the smoke was coming out of the alternator?

Could it have been a smoking rubber fan belt?

Does the alternator spin freely? Does the a/c compressor spin freely? Does the water pump spin freely?

Is the belt loose?

Most shops like Kragens and Auto zone will bench test an alternator for free if you take it in to them.

If you do need to replace it, buy one for a 1971 Mustang with a high amperage output rating.

Compare them side by side before walking out the door with it, but the Mustang unit should be a match for what is on your Pantera.

yah, when we disconnected the wires to the alt it stoped smoking and out theory was confirmed when we pulled of the firewall hole then reconected the alt. and saw smoke coming directly out of it from the vents

Shorted diode, goes right to ground or your battery is hooked up backwards.

we know the battery was hooked up right but whats a diode? i dnt really know anything about electronics

Subtle humor just doesn't cut it anymore, I guess?

OHHHH i get it now haha. well we just got the alternator back from the shop. turns out our voltage regulator was a cheapy p.o.s. and caused the alternator to blowout like that. so we had it rebuilt and uped to 91amps. we also bought a new voltage regulator

Once you let the blue smoke out of an alternator its broken. You'll need to refill it with blue smoke. Of course rebuilds & new alternators will be filled with blue smoke out of the box.
