So i pulled the alternator out of our pantera today and relized something. we think we need a new alternator cuz this one was smoking when we started it up so we disconnected it and ran the starter of the battery. but is it possible that it wasnt the alternators fault? like culd a faulty volt regulator or smething else have caused the alternator to smoke? if any one knows anything or has a suggestion like getting the alt tested at a shop anything would be apretiated

Thanks

Are you SURE the smoke was coming out of the alternator?

Could it have been a smoking rubber fan belt?

Does the alternator spin freely? Does the a/c compressor spin freely? Does the water pump spin freely?

Is the belt loose?

Most shops like Kragens and Auto zone will bench test an alternator for free if you take it in to them.

If you do need to replace it, buy one for a 1971 Mustang with a high amperage output rating.

Compare them side by side before walking out the door with it, but the Mustang unit should be a match for what is on your Pantera.
