From what I know, 'American Pie' was the name of the plane.

Very cool! I still have my Buddy Holly '45' with "That'll be the Day!." Don't have anything to play it on anymore, but I still have it.

About 8 or 9 years ago I had an old record player and had the 45's out to share the music with my kids. When our 15 year old babysitter arrived to watch the kids that evening so the wife and I could go out on a date, just for fun I handed her one of the 45's and asked if she knew what it was? She studied it carefully for a moment, read the label in the center and the song titles, and guessed that it was "an antique CD." Sure made me feel old. She had never before seen a record, and had no idea how it worked.

thanks Dennis - I enjoyed that. There was basically nothing in that video that didn't ring a memory cell or two.

I still feel I grew up in a most amazing and wonderful time; a time of great change and a dawning realization of reality that will never quite be repeated by any other generation.

I remember seeing a picture of the plane with 'American Pie' written on it with a painting of a slice of pie. I'm wondering now if it was in one of the movies depicting the crash? Does anyone else remember this?

This is the nose art for CH-47D serial 89-00138, photographed circa July 2002, assigned to the F Co., 159th Aviation Regiment, "Big Windy." I've seen others too, so I'm sure it's reinforced the myth.
