Not That I can really comment on Panteras in particular, but cars in general.
If the paint is old and shows signs of rust, then usually that is ALL it has, and is more honest, yet the truth can sometimes hurts.
Where if the paint is NEW , and 'rust free' you have no idea what is really under there, untill it all comes back in 6 months.then it will kill you !From what I can tell they all rust,'cope with it' at least if you know what it has you can sort it out properly, not a quick fix and splash of paint to sell.
This is a pretty odd 1974 model.

The VIN 6853 is well into the 1974 model year, but it has a two-pod dash, and the wipers park to the left. The last VIN with wipers parking to the left was 5899. The last two-pod dash was well before that.

He also mentions a gas tank fill tube extension. It would be interesting to know how this car came together.
This car is in the Registry.

I've communicated with the owner also.

Al Johnson has had this car for many years.
6853 is a VIN in the date range of 12/73 to 1/74, but it is listed as a 8/74.

Other info, like the ZF number also suits an earlier car range.

The dash is the version like my 11/72.

Although the new dash begain around 1/73, there is a handful of cars in April 73 with the early dashes (some are in the Registry also).

This may be the latest VIN with the early dash. Hey DeTomaso didn't throw away useable parts!

It does not have the gill fuel filler door.

So it is a car that has mixed early and late features, and I strongly believe it came from the factory this way.

I'd love to inspect in person, to better document an unusual car. Anyone car to drive it from Houston to San Jose?

Chuck
