If one were to attempt to perpetuate the driving experience of one's Pantera, which action camera would one buy? I'm sure there are plenty of options that give a good video picture, but what about the sound? The glorious sound of our V8s? I've tried googling action camera comparisons, they don't mention which has the best sound pick up. I only read somewhere that they're all pretty bad, and that all would need an external microphone?

Any experience?

I too will be interested in seeing the responses to this question. When I tried getting decent video of my car driving the GoPro was good in the cabin but outside all I got was swooshing wind noises. My brother is a videographer and said the only decent way to do it is use a separate digital audio recorder and splice the sound with the video after. They are $200 and up but can often be rented. Make sure there is a visible and auditory event that allows for easy synching (a clap on camera).
The week before last I mounted a GOPRO inside the car and got some footage of its first legal drive on the roads here.

The mounting position sucked as it turned out but good enough to get it on record Smiler.

With the windows down (summer in Adelaide here and the AC is not fixed yet) the wind noise wasn't great at times - but the engine sound definitely was during the other times.

I'll have a look in to whether a "sock" either is available or can be made for the GOPRO to take out wind noise like they have for remote camera mic's... Can't imagine it would too hard to do.
The GoPro still has the best rating in reviews; I have a couple of the Hero 3 Black and they have version 5 with 4K recording out now.

I was suction cup mounting mine on the exterior of the raccear it was a little susceptible to vibration, but there's a lot of harmonics going through the car at 9500 rpm and not a lot of truly fixed panels to mount on, so I have fabricated a roll hoop fixed mounting, but yet to test it.

I don't really pickup any wind noise (that is discernible over the engine), although it might be dependent on which camera housing you are using. An external sock enclosed microphone could improve sound quality, but with the GoPro it is critical to get the correct resistance microphone. I think a lot of people fall down as they plug in any generic mic.

The true racers are using Racelogic video Vbox multiple cameras integrated with a data acquisition, but that's a long way from you $0.10 Chinese camera!

When I mentioned wind noise, it was with cameras mounted on the outside of the car, regardless of the solid or (much worse) open back GoPro case. This was a GoPro 1, so pretty crap quality as well. I haven't tried connecting a mic to the GoPro as I don't have a good one, and regardless you'd have a chord to deal with as well.

I just recently bought a Waylens (waylens.com) in cabin camera. Its new (one of those kickstarter companies), but the camera it really neat. It is conical in shape with and lcd display on the back. It is very sporty looking, not like my cobra or Gopro. It has a GPS in the wired windshield mount, and the camera has a g-force meter, roll and pitch, speed time and date and ambient weather. It also has a stabilizer so that the shakes are almost nil. It also picks up the engine sound really well, from inside the car. You can do 0-690 runs and post them. All in all a nifty little in car cam.
