The tapered seat on the bottom of the bleeder is no longer plugging the orifice (and mating seat) at the bottom of the bleeder well.

Brake fluid is free to flow up to the hole, and back suction is prevented by the spring loaded ball.

The threads provide enough of a seal to prevent air getting in that way.
