I am looking to take off my bulkhead cover to do some engine inspection and would like any tips and tricks to do so. The book I have shows very few pictures of removing the interior cover behind the seat and the car they use is an early one with hinged seats. Mine is a 74. The bulkhead hump looks straight forward but I am more concerned about the interior trim (don't want to damage any clips, etc.) and what all needs to be removed (seats console if at all). I have heard guys say that the first time round it took them 3 hours and now they can do it in 20minutes. I would rather it take me less than longer.
If I have missed another discussion about this please show me where, all my searches have found are topics on reducing the bulkhead (dog door).

Thanks

First, the seats must go all the way forward. There are a few sheet-metal screws to be removed along the bottom on both sides, and the two big bolts holding the shoulder harness clips & upholstery panel on both upper corners must be unscrewed. The console etc need not be disturbed.

Once these are out, the whole upholstering panel lifts up to release a pair of strap-hooks near the top, then slides sideways out the passenger door, with some wrestling. A helper may be necessary as the fiberglas panel is big & bulky although not heavy. The shoulder harness retracters bolted to the firewall in '74s will need to be unbolted, too.

Once the panel is out, you might want to make a fairly simple modification that allows all this to happen in seconds rather than hours. The bubble in the panel's center is cut loose from the main panel so it's then separate, and is held on with glued-on velcro patches. So the seat movements, bolt & screw removal and the gyrations with the shoulder harness retracters, plus enlisting a helper are all unnecessary afterwards. Let me know if you need further details on the mod. Most of the GR-3 club-racers used such a mod back in the '70s.
