Gents. the wife and I will be vacationing in Napa Valley for a week in May. We would like to then take another week, rent a convertable and drive down the Pacific coast highway and see the sites on the way to L.A. where we will fly home. My question is.... what sites are worth going to? And also where are the good places to stop and spend the night as we go south to L.A. ?

Thanks in advance......... Doug.H #6434

San Francisco is a great place to explore.

The coastline between Monterey/Carmel and Morro Bay is a sight unto itself, traveling south on Highway 1. Considered by some to be the most beautiful coatline anywhere.

Just north of Morro Bay is a little tourist town called Cambria, its a great place to spend the night. Lots of shops and places to eat, you can take a walk on Moonstone Beach. Wake up in the morning and take a tour of Hearst Castle, then spend another night in Cambria. Hearst castle tours require advance reservations, you'll be glad you took the tour. Be sure to have a meal at Linn's with a slice of olallieberry pie à la mode for desert. I use a wonderful, private B&B in Cambria when I stay there, private hot tub, comfy bed, nice breakfast. Contact me privately if you want more info.

As you continue south on Highway 1 then Highway 101 you'll pass through Ventura. When you see the pier & Crown Plaza hotel be sure to wave, as you'll pass right by Pantera International, we're next door to the Crown Plaza.

Most definitely true! However, Hwy 1 is closed about 12 miles south of Carmel - every few years part of the mountain decides it would rather be in the ocean. You can cut across to Cambria and Hwy 1 from Hwy 101 at Paso Robles, or you can go from 101 at King City through a military base over to Hwy 1 to take in more of the breathtaking coastline.

How long are you going to spend on this trip?
San Francisco (lots of tourist sites)
Cambria (Hearst Castle)
Santa Barbara is always nice for a visit

I'll think more about the list, but first, what are you interested in? Seeing lighthouses? Fine dining, local small town happenings/festivals, luxury resorts? Let us know and we can make better recommendations.
George is right!!! We go to Cambria all the time and stay right on the beach at cambria shores inn, shown in the web link below. Just unbelievable, nothing like it. Cambria used to be a good Pantera over night stay on the way to the annual Monterey show. Ha ha, on your coastal trip you will see the cows in the fields have it made, they have ocean view from the hills as you drive by.

Don't forget to check with all the local Pantera club chapters along the route - no doubt you'd love to have dinner with your left coast bretheren - PCNC meets the last Thursday of the Month at Coco's restaurant in Sunnyvale, if you're in the neighborhood. And if you find yourself in the LA area over a weekend, be sure to check out Cars & Coffee in Irvine on Saturday mornings - always a great show! But get there early!
