.....why many airbrush out their license plate on posted internet photos?

I have heard some explain it's a theft risk since it can allow your car to be located through DMV search. Really? Didn't think DMV records were publicly available/accessible. Some of the same people who cite this reason also don't seem to have a problem posting their name, city, have a listed phone number/address, etc and other things that can more easily identify vehicle location.

I've heard other explanations but what's up?

I also wondered why. But I've met many Pantera owners who are afraid to tell you their names or where they live. Go figure.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if anyone stole my car. It's well insured and being just about complete on this project I wouldn't mind starting over. Which is why I don't hide my plate in pics.

It's the prosecutors and police I worry about seeing my plate. If they can see a plate number on the ticket and the ticket actually spells Pantera or Detomaso correctly, then if they know how to Google they could pick holes in any of the lame excuses I use to fight them in court.
I figure the news shows have to blank out license plates so that they wouldn't be sued by some hapless Joe (or Jodie) who is supposedly a vegan, but happens to be parked in front of the golden arches or similar establishment that caters to carnivores and are caught on tape in the background of the actual news story. We've all become so used to seeing plates blanked out we figure we should be doing it too.

In this video, they even blank out the license plates on the police cars ...

There are also stories of kids who print fake license plates on glossy paper, put them on their cars and speed or run red lights to trigger traffic cameras hoping to get the plate owner a ticket (a teacher, a parent, the bully who took their lunch money).
Fake Licenses for Tickets?

David, maybe you can use this as an excuse in the future - claim that it was a white Fiero with a faked plate doing 170mph past the camera. Wink
