I considered the M1s as the second generation Pantera back then. They had a wonderful BMW engine in them. Known as the M88/1.

It was a 3.45 liter (211 cubic inch) in-line 6, naturally aspirated. Individual runner FI (6 throttle body mechanical FI). 3.7" bore x 3.3" stroke, 9.0:1 compression ratio. Dry sump lubrication, light weight crank (all in-line 6 cranks are light), DOHC, 24 valves, 7000 rpm rev limit. About 277 bhp @ 6500 rpm ... i.e. 80 horsepower per liter, or 1.3 horsepower per cubic inch.

In M88/2 racing trim (turbo-charged) the same engine made between 800 and 900 bhp.

I've never driven or ridden in an M1, but a friend had an M6, which was equipped with basically the same engine (M88/3). The M6 was based on BMW's E24 chassis (635 CSI), manufactured 1983 - 1989. The M88/3 made close to 290 bhp in Europe, 250 bhp in the states. Very nice engine.
