Get this!

My big fat GMC Denali XL is parked in front of the house and my wife notices a ticket on the windshield. "What the f*** is this?" she asks and hands me not ticket, but something that looks like a ticket. It reads "Citizen's Statement of Offence." The complex form from ASAT - Action for Socially Acceptable Transport includes all the relevant vehicle info and indicate the types of offences. My offence was ticked off as "Oversize Gas-Guzzling Vehicle."

It claims phoney money in fines and looks very official, but is clearly a scare piece. The front of the "ticket" says "read other side." The other side goes on to lecture how we should move close to work so we don’t have to drive; we should never speed, let our cars idle or use an automatic starter in winter; use public transport …and on and on.

There's a web site for responses and information - so I decide to have some fun.

I respond to the web site telling them I need to talk to someone about my ticket #.

Some volunteer writes back - "yes, you can talk to me."

So I respond that I got a ticket and don’t know where to pay.

The person writes back "it's not really a ticket - it's raising awareness - just read the other side."

Then I write back the following:

<< What makes you think that I am not aware of the environment or that I do not follow all of the information on your card?

I live close to work and ride my bike to work except in the winter, when I walk most days or share a car pool. I do not speed and take care to ensure the car runs as efficiently as possible. I have always used a corn-based fuel (until Quebec eliminated all Sunoco stations in favor of Ultramar - but I still fill up in Ontario and NY when I can) and I drive less than 5,000km per year (except for an annual trip south which burns a lot less fuel than a jet does.

Which leads me to ask the following questions:

1 - If you are concerned about the environment why kill trees and litter the streets with duplicate copy tickets?

2 - Why don't you save waste and do your homework before making false assumptions about the people you attack?

3 - Are you a volunteer? How much time do you give for free each year toward this effort?

4 - How else do you contribute to environmental reform?

5 - How much tax do you pay?

6 - What do you do to make sure your taxes are being well spent?

There are far more environmentally responsible ways to get your message across instead of the outdated method you are using. It wastes paper, wastes energy to clean it up and recycle it, and wastes time because you are not reaching your target very efficiently.

I look forward to your response. >>

No doubt I'll get some lame response to which I will reply with tear jerking story about my work in Greenpeace, my large donations and personal efforts to support all alternate fuel initiatives and then give them shit for touching my SUV which I use to deliver meals on wheels to the aged once a week.

Then I'll go pour some STP octane booster in my 101 Octane laden Pantera and see how much fuel I can burn up, along with leaving some hot oil and melted rubber granules and go look for some a**hole on a bike kissing trees and putting phoney tickets on cars in my neighborhood.

Am I crazy? Because if they're right we all better park our Panteras and get some nice little Prius to rip around in. Hey did anyone see the Prius display at Monterey?

You have some good points, and it must be fun. I have to tell the truth....Monday before the hurricane hit, I filled all my fuel tanks with 2.68$ high test. Since that time I only started my Pantera 1 time just to feel th A/c working, since I just blew a hose and let a lot of Hydrocarbons up into the stratosphere. Don't worry, I have it recharged now. I used a splash of fuel to get some tires lit in the backyard where I cut a bunch of trees... I'll tell you this is the best way to get a green tree to burn. Shure The rubber causes a black cloud and some ash,,but I keep my car inside, so no harm done there. I have been riding my enduro motorcycle everywhere I go. In 3 days I have only burned a couple of quarts. This will save fuel for later use in the Pantera. By the way, I checked on installing a Pinto 2300 turbo 4 cyl. I found out that the engine is about 6 inches longer that the Clevland so that's out for now. Desprate times call for desparete measures. Name with held by request.
Sounds like an interesting group of nuts! With the current and future fuel prices I expect they really don’t need to bother.

I read that the big spike in fuel prices has a lot of people dumping the SUVs and looking for more fuel efficient autos. I understand new SUV sales are plummeting including the price of used SUVs. Sounds a lot like the 70s when fuel guzzler values plummeted including cars like the Pantera. Apparently some dealers will not even take SUVs for trade-in because they already have too many they cannot sell. Hope all this does not impact the value of our Panteras. In the 70s people drove Panteras as their daily drivers so you would think it would be different this time. But it certainly is impacting the value of the SUVs. It would be pretty nasty to own a new SUV right now that becomes worthless and you sill have four years of payments. I will be interesting to see how it all works out.

People are so fickle about this type of thing, one minute they say they would never get rid of their SUV and then when the values start dropping everything changes very fast!
Hell even at these gas prices I still love my gas guzzling truck!

Admittedly it sits in the driveway more than it used to, but I still need it for those occasional trips when I need to haul something big.

Granted mine is close to ten years old and has been "paid for" for some time so these gas prices are a little easier to accept than if I had just plunked down $50K for it.
Just write them a quick e-mail, tell them no thanks, you prefer to think for yourself, rather than to allow an idiot to think for you.

An efficient society, city, etc; must be planned ahead of time, rather than expecting people to be efficient as an after thought, no matter how inconvenient that may be. In other words, instead of puttng flyers on your windshield, this group should be having a dialog with politicians, supervisors, managers, developers. Its just easier to put a flyer on your windshield. Makes them feel good. Boy oh boy, they're changing the world now! Make me laugh. They've accomplished nothing. What a pathetic, futile, impotent act.

Our cities are built by greed & self interest. Then, when things get extremely bad, people "react" and try to put a band-aid on it. The politicians who approved the poorly planned projects then jump on the band-wagon, thump their chests, hold press conferences, tell people what they want ot hear, how its all messed up, point the blame at these terrible developers, and insist we must pass legislation. Then the hoopla dies down, and the same politicians do yet another favor for the next developer (or maybe the same one). Over and over this cycle goes. This politician will get re-elected by the same "deep thinkers" who put that flyer on your windshield because he made such a good showing on that issue! Jeez.

Your friendly neighborhood misanthrope, George
Gee guys, this thread cracks me up. I haven't laughed so hard since I last spoke to David! I would have posted earlier but I was out driving the crap out of my car. I was worried that my gas was getting stale as some of it has been there for almost a month. Should I be worried? Maybe I need to drive more.

I feel kind of bad because a bunch of the people who work with me walk to work, don't own a car etc. etc. All I have to do is START my Pantera and I've un-done all their good deeds for a month. On the bright side, without these guys, I'd be part of the problem, and now I'm part (OK, the bad part) of the solution. Smiler

Like I was telling a nice fellow I met today who is looking to get a Pantera, after a crap day, all I have to do it punch the gas and it all seems OK again. At least it does until the gas runs out...
