DEAR SIR, MY 74 PANTERA L NEVER CAME WITH THE BALLAST RESISTER THAT I SEE ON MOST CARS. MY WIREING DIAGRAM SHOWS A RESISTENCE WIRE RUNNING FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH (RUN POSISTION) TO THE COIL + SIDE. DOES THIS WIRE ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR THE "EXTERNAL" RESISTER?? MY CAR DOES START-UP FAST FIRST TIME, EVERY TIME. IT IS RUNNING AN ACCEL DUAL POINT. THANK-YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME. SINCERELY YOURS, MARLIN JACK, MANTECA, CALIFORNIA.

That seems to be true- only early cars (my Sept '72 for instance0 had a ballast resistor). But I know some cars did get a resistance wire. With a VOM (volt-ohm-meter) and an idle Sturday, you should be able to tell us. On starting, you should get 12v thru one wire, and when running, it should be 9 v or so thru the resistance wire. If you're not buring up coils or points, it must be like this. So I wouldn't worry.
