On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first! time, Lelouch was arrested. He! has nev er revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground until a DVD release a few years ago.

We played this for years at the Honolulu's Police Academy's Tactical Driving Class to wind up the recruits when I taught EVOC there. I have a less blocky version on VHS tape which I've been meaning to convert to DVD. This post was a reminder to do it before something happens to the tape! Thanks!
I shared this video with some friends at work and we discovered an alternate description of the Paris drive. Bursts the bubble a bit, but it¹s still damn cool.

I can't seem to make the hyperlink work since it is interpreting the ' in the French title as the end of the link. You just need to copy and paste the words into your browser, but don't include the brackets at each end.
This is definitely one of the all time great driving films. And, as already mentioned, it all takes place on uncloased public roads. Reckless? Yes! Legend? Yes! Check it out.
