Any "performance" car that has Computer Aided Gear Shifting electronic control sort of seems to have an identity crisis of major proportion.

If you can't shift it 1-2-3-4, but instead are over ridden to a mandated 1-4 shift at low rpm levels, something is amiss. Confused

But they do look nice, and the HP numbers are impressive, and for a few years it will be a car that impresses those they view it.

After that though, it will become another 'older' vette.

Our Panteras however will ALWAYS be a classic exotic, and not something that continues to show up on used car lots for lower and lower sticker pricing.

If you truly enjoyed what the Pantera is all about, you won't find the same in the vette.

Hope to see you return to us in a few years. Wink

Yes, I grappled with the main decision of why I wanted a Pantera to begin with - I agree with you, Vettes are a dime a dozen. And as I always have done, I still do - if a Pantera is next to a Vette, my attention is always drawn to the Pantera.

As for the Computer Aided Gear Selector, it is only active if you shift out of first gear at less than 30mph - which I seldom do. But I have bought and installed a CAGS bypass. The only reason that is installed is to keep the feds from charging a $2500 gas guzzler fee.

You know, if the Panteras were still in production, they'd probably have a manumatic with steering wheel paddles like the Lambos, and Ferraris. You can't stop technology.

No the Vette won't age like a fine wine like the Pantera, but at this time in my life it fills the bill, fast, good looking, and reliable.

I would still like to have a Pantera in the not to distant future, but this works for me right now.

To all the others, thank you for your kind complements on my new toy.

The Z06 is a great value for a “Super Car”. You can get in and fire it right up. Today’s C-6s will likely never strand their owners. It can be worked on at thousands of Chevrolet dealers and parts are readily available. A phenomenal daily driver.

The Z06 can smoke my Pantera. It probably could smoke 90% of the Panteras on the road. However, to me the Z06 is BORING. Yes, I said BORING. Just like a 911, of any flavor. Obviously, not boring in a performance sense. But just lacking character and SOUL.

My son tried for several years to get me to sell the Pantera for a Viper. 1st gen. Vipers are readily available and at bargain prices. I drove one and it was a super car. It is a tremendous bargain for the performance. However, after returning from a lengthy test drive and getting back in to my Pantera there was no comparison. Again, the Viper lacked character and SOUL.

I can work on most of my Pantera. Like many of you I enjoy the challenge and the satisfaction of this type of bonding with the “Beast”/ “Italian Mistress (take your pick here). The same can not be said for a Z06 or 911.These cars are so technologically complex I would never attempt working on them. I love every cut and bruise I get working on my Pantera. Badges of honor I enjoy having family and friends ask what I have done now with the Pantera. It is my recreation and mental therapy.

In 1975, I bought my first Pantera (#4060) the styling is as classic and timeless now as it was in the 70’s. Very few Panteras are the same. From bone stock to outrageous twin turbos all are expressions of their individual owners. All Panteras have their own unique SOUL. I do not feel the same can be said for dime a dozen contemporary cars like a Z06.

I know everyone has a different take on cars. And I love my Pantera in the same way you do...I even enjoy working on it sometimes.

I think that one can find the soul of a Z06 and 911, but it takes more than a test drive. I love my Porsche as much as my Pantera, and the reasons are usually the exact opposite.

I love my Porsche's 20mpg as much as I take a sick delight in the Pantera 8.5mpg.

I love the Porsche for being quiet and well behaved as much as I love the Pantera's obnoxious aggression.

I like the elegance of pulling up to valet in the Porsche as much as I like setting off all the car alarms in the parking garage when I take the Pantera.

My 911 has soul, it is just the soul of a sprinter rather than a UFC fighter.

The Z06 will prove itself to have a soul, especially when Mark starts to put a bit of his own into the car.

Wow, Robert. With a little intro, your reply needs to be sent to Road&Track. Nicely written, and 'ditto' to your thoughts. Porsche, Viper, Pantera - each very much has its own personality and soul.

This may sound flat out weird, but each car makes ME feel a little different as a result of being in THAT car. I'm in the Viper today, and the car just has an attitude - especially for a 'new' car - that is hard to replicate. It draws the stares and inquiries in equal amounts to the Pantera, just of a different type.

I've never been a 'Vette guy, but the Z06 is the one I'd pick. I'm sure it gets its share of attention, gives its share of personality/soul back to the owner as well. Enjoy.
Not a Z06...that would be way too dark, but I'm sorry to say that I too have been drawn to the 'chebby' darkside.

I'm in search of an Ultima GTR.....I initially thought about a Noble M400 to stay true to Ford, with it's V6 twin turbo and a bit more refinement, but 3.2 secs 0-60 is just too slow....the Ultima's 0-60 in 2.6 secs has me hooked.
