The stock bulbs are 2 watt. Adding 5 watt seems to brighten things up and doesn't overload the adjusting rheostat or melt the stock sockets in the instruments. Porsche or BMW bulbs will work; I use German made "OSRAM" brand 5 watt bulbs, available from most good auto parts stores but not Kragens or Pep Boys. Take your old bulbs along for comparison purposes- there are LOTS of different bulbs available but not all fit.
I replaced the bulbs this weekend with 5w 80 lumen bulbs from Pantera East this weekend and they are brighter but still not as bright as I would like them to be. (At least not as compared to the white faced VDO gauges I am running now) I am now considering using a smaller wattage bulb in the gauges, but I would really like to get the speedo & tach brighter. Anyone ever tried taking the gauges apart and drilling a hole in the back that would allow another bulb and socket to be mounted?
I had the same issue/concern with my Pantera and I asked Kirk Evans of Amerisport to add two additional lamps to each unit ( Tach and Speedo). This help along with the 5 watt euro bulbs yet I felt that they were still not bright enough. I added 20mm extensions to each lamp assembly and this addition has made the unit viewable at night.
