Hello, first post here. Recently purchased a 74 Pantera (L); it’s in pretty original condition. I have a few “tasteful upgrades” in mind, nothing irreversible. First up is the steering wheel, which to my eye is not in keeping with the rest of the cockpit.

I have a Momo steering wheel in mind, but am wondering which size is generally preferred here.

I understand (from reading here) that I will need to pick up an adapter hub from Wilkinson. Any particular advice there ?

I'm also interested to learn how to go about getting a Detomaso logo button for the center of the steering wheel.

thanks, looking forward to learning from you guys

Jack

There is a sweet-spot for diameter of wheels based on your preferred driving position and more importantly how you fit in the car and how large you are.  Some people prefer a smaller 13" whereas others like larger say 15" wheels.   Remember, the bigger you go, the more likely the wheel will hit your thighs as you sit in the car and or turn the wheel.  Yes, you need a Momo adapter and the 6 metric Allen headed screws to mount it.  Not sure if Steve still has them.  I searched for along time and found a vintage Momo "GT" wheel which I really liked.  I think it was 15".

Be SURE your adapter fits the Pantera steering shaft spline tightly. There's a common metric (?) spline that slides right onto a Pantera steering shaft but is very slightly oversized and fits loosely. So you're essentially steering with only the tips of the splines. These have stripped out when used "vigorously" in big-tire Panteras driven hard. Driven sedately, they can last for years but what fun is that?

This is the adapter I used on my Nardi

if fits perfectly… Snug but not too snug

The length of the adapter, and if the steering wheel is dished does make quite a difference. This adapter is cast aluminum .

I consider my set up perfect… turn signal stock, Reach, legroom and distance from dashboard

I chose this steering wheel because the spokes are turning down left and right and give a better of view of the Gauges on my two pod Dashboard

Thanks for all of the info, issues to consider and ideas

I ended up going with a Momo Prototipo with black spokes, 350mm (13.75"). Got the idea for the Prototipo here.

I wanted to keep the cockpit fairly consistent, so while I really like the fresher Momo wheels, the Prototipo was an upgrade that wouldn't look out of place. As for size, I now get it (after having a 6" tall friend sit in the car) but I'm 5'7" so the wheel on my thighs thing isn't too bad.

I'll save the Ford Capri parts bin wheel for the next guy should he want to go back.

I could still use some ideas regarding the center button - no offense to the good people at Momo, but I would like to swap in something with the Detomaso logo. Any ideas on where to get that? I see most folks sporting a center button with the Detomaso logo on their aftermarket whhels

They have become difficult to find. Some are attempting to create their own.

Ron McCall has made some for his application but they differ in that they are intended to resemble the original center caps on the Ford GT40 race cars.

Using the Ghia emblem from the front fender is an interesting idea. I think that mounting it externally would offer a really nice three dimensional touch.

The originals had two pins that stuck through the fender and used a little hex nut on the pins. The current replacements have a peel and stick adhesive that would simplify the mounting.

Do you have a part number for that hub adapter, or a link you can post to where you bought it?  Thanks!

like Roland I purchased my adapter from them and also my MOMO steering wheel from this company about 8 years ago.  I did a quick search tonight but didn’t find the hub on their site.  I went through my folder and found the receipt.  Part number is 534.  I would try calling them directly.
