Hey guys,

I need to remove the trim panel that goes across the face of my dash from end to end. The plan is to remove the vents, speedo, and tach and start yanking on it (caveman style) until it pops free. Is this the way to go about it, or is it fastened in somehow?

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike I think its glued because I seem to think I noticed gray interior color behind a thin sheetmetal backing behind the woodgrained venier. I would try a heat gun or the wifes hair dryer first .. and see if it losens up.

Sorry to answer your question I;m not sure But I have the dash from 6476 sitting on a shelf and I can look ?

My wood is glued to a thin piece of sheetmetal. It's the sheetmatal that I don't know how is fastened.

Paul: Is your wood veneer glued directly to the dash? Did you have a difficult time getting it off? How did you go about it?

Ron: Yes, the gray leather from the dash is behind the sheetmetal. The sheetmetal lifts at the edges, but doesn't budge towards the center. If your dash is out, can you just take a look from behind and see if there are any clips, or studs sticking through from the trim panel? I already have the material that we talked about to recover the trim panel. It's a real close match!

Mark: You may be right about it being glued. Did you ever take yours out?

Can anyone else confirm that the panel is secured with glue?

Thanks.

Did you have to heat it, or did you just start on one side and firmly 'peel' it off? Did you have to use any tools (scraper, etc.)? Thanks.

In my car ...

The burlwood veneer is glued to an aluminum backing.

The veneer with aluminum backing is glued to my dash. In addition it is mechanically held in place by the emergency flasher, gauges (tach, speedo, oil temp), brackets on the backside of my a/c vents, and nuts that attach the small script "detomaso" logo on the right side of the dash.

Thanks guys for answering my post.

Well, I yanked, and pulled, and even threatened it, but nothing. It was moving, but not releasing. So I put one foot on the windshield and the other on the steering wheel and pulled so hard that the windshield popped out! Just kidding. I felt around behind it and it turns out that there were six studs securing it to the dash. The nuts were 7mm.

With the Speedo and Tach out, two were in the small spine that runs between the two gauges, top and bottom; one was to the left of the speedo (right between the oil temp gauge and vent); one was to the right of the tach (between the oil press gauge and the vent); one was right between the two center vents (accessible with them out); and the last was to the left of the far vent (accessible through the glove box).

Keep in mind that my Pantera is a factory '86 5-S, so things may be different on earlier Panteras.

With the mystery solved, it came right out. So my wood veneer was glued to the metal panel that was bolted to the fiberglass dash.

Thanks again Mark, Ron, Paul, and B.G. for taking the time to help me with this.

Great Michael .... my thoughts are obvious ..the aluminum backing not only keeps the high gloss wood veneer straight so its look nice but also the veneer needs to be cleared and it would be very difficult to spray it then glue ot t the dash .. so the backing can be prep'd out fo the car then bolted in ... also if your thinking of replacing the veneer .. DYKES LUMBER is a good source ... or if your going to re glue it ..3M makes a good interior adhesive spray .. then I think something heavy to press out the curling.
