dipstick length??

Peter; I happen to have the tube and dipstick out of my car and have the following measurements:
Tube: Total length of tube is 36 inches, 26 inches from the dipstick insertion point to the bulge in the tube where the add'l 10" goes into the block
Dipstick: Total length-38 5/8", with 5/8" inches of this being inside of the bell of the handle, since the bell portion of the handle slips over the tube. The flat potion of the dipstick is 3 1/4"(safe, full). When fully inserted the flat portion of the dipstick is 2 1/2" beyond the tube on mine.
TSB #1 was announcing a longer replacement tube & dipstick (D16Y 6750-B which was 38 5/8" long designated by having a yellow handle.

But, but.......

You can also calibrate your own engine by merely pouring a known amount of oil (ensuring your oil filter is full by running the engine for a short time)... Mark the stick with a file or engraver.

Of course you need to know how many quarts your pan should hold.

Rocky: You are correct. As you say, a known quantity, and a consistent means of measurement is all you need.
