Does anybody have knowledge about the condition of the car in terms of rust?

I looked at this car fairly recently. The wiring is a nightmare ,there is a fair amount of rust in the floors , the DeTomaso script that you see on the windshield is etched into the glass! There are also panthers etched into the side glass! It has a triple disc clutch installed that is literally like a switch. Off or on . no in between. The car was a mess. It sold at a local auction about 6-8 months ago I believe. It looks like the new owner has done nothing to it since.

Thanks for the info Ron. Well the clutch is necessary because of the grunt, race car like, ok. I handled this in a lot of cars.
But the other issues sound bad, the rust maybe a killer.

Looks nice though - If I had the time and garage space I'd get it for the next project...
It will be a lot of work - but based on what I'm doing with 1424 now it'd be a similar effort I suspect.

Hey R. McCall,
When you say that the car is a "mess" what are you comparing it to? This is in no way advertised as a mint condition Pantera. It was a purpose built race car and used for it's purpose. You are right about the triple disc clutch being an on-off switch because it is really tough to drive on the street. As for wiring yes it could have been done better but again it was built to be a monster race car. We haven't done much to the car other than putting in a brand new clutch and throw out bearing but we felt it didn't need much more than that for racing. There is some rust but its not like the car is rotting out and falling apart. When you see the car up on a lift it is not as bad as you make it out to be.

I own a shop which specializes in Pantera building/repair . I was comparing the car to the countless other Panteras that I have built , repaired ,raced or serviced.
Gilles asked if anyone had knowledge of the car and I gave my opinion of the car. I was not trying to bash it ,only giving my honest opinion. I said that it had rust in the floors . I didn't say the car was rotted . I don't remember seeing any rust in the frame at all. I jacked the car up and inspected it . I would have liked to see it on a lift. I know that the car sold at auction so there was a chance that the car was bought by someone who would advertise the car as something that it is not. Thankfully, that doesn't seem to be the case.
The former owner was selling his two Panteras a few years ago. I made him a cash offer for both cars but only ended up with the GT5-S.If I thought the car was that bad, I would have not made an offer on it.
The car has a lot of really nice parts that make it a great track car. The brakes are top notch . They are NOT the run of the mill Wilwoods. They are MUCH better than that. It would take a fair amount of work to make it a nice street car but it could be made into a competent track car very easily.
What clutch did you install in the car? McLeod makes a twin disc clutch for a Pantera that is a direct bolt in and can easily handle the power that car makes. ( 700+ would be my assumption from driving it).

Thanks for the message Ron. I do appreciate your knowledge on Pantera's and would be interested to hear more about your assessment. We put in the same race spec Triple-disc clutch that was in there previously. The exact model I do not know but my tech does. It is still basically a switch and I agree the car would need quite a bit of work to be more streetable. But it sure is built to be a monster on the track as we are the ones who purchased it in auction. We were going to track it after starting a race team but other projects have put this on the back burner as well as there being no road courses or anything on Long Island. I'll shoot you an email to discuss further.
