When I bought my car from the previous owner, it was in mid-restoration. I've since lost his phone#, and I can't recall if he said anything about safety wiring the ring gear in the ZF. Given the thoroughness with which he'd done everything else up to the point at which he was forced to stop, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that he'd sent it to you guys for a rebuild/check-over.
If you had the serial# off the trans case, could you tell me if it had been safety wired by your shop? I know I could check for safety wiring by pulling the cover, but that would neccessitate pulling the trans out of the car, something which I'm just too friggin' lazy to do right now.
