I got a call from Pat Mical today. He's the Pantera Sage in New Hampshire. (I see his name creep into all sorts of places these days, most recently winning a national show with the BMW M1 he built). Anyway, he says - -

"I got ahold of some aluminum heads the other day. Finest machine work I've seen. Put a set of my headers, a Lunati cam, an Edelbrock intake, DuraSpark ignition. Pretty stock stuff. I'm excited about this. I'll call you later with the dyno results."

He went on to say his headers on this 74GTS might be good for 25hp. The cam would add a little to that. Maybe 12 more for the intake.

At 6pm he said, "Based on the Ford spec book, we went from 264 to 366hp. Over 300 at the wheels. I'm happy. It was a good day."

The heads, he contends are the magic part. Plus he figured they saved another 80 pounds, the intake perhaps 30.

He will send quantified results later. For those who know him, he is no BSer. Doesn't put up with it either. Just thought I'd share what I know thus far. More to come if anyone's interested.

Actually, since I'd save my 'boat anchor' intake for the next person (along with every other potential shred of goofy original stuff) I guess it doesn't matter if I painted it or not. Personally, the casting is so fine, it'd be a shame to paint!

Anyway, I did think what an awesome trip to have Pat do the work, then go drive it home. Okay, maybe he has it delivered half way or something... NH is a long way from AL.

Anyway, pretty cool to talk to a guy this fired up... got ME fired up.
Hi Adams,

My car is the one that Pat did all the work on that he was telling you about. I took it in for a tune-up since it was running very rough and I wanted him to look over the rest of the car (I hadn't spent any time on it myself in the past year and thought it should be checked out). I had to sit down when he told me all that was wrong with the engine (and other stuff) and what he was going to do to straighten it out. When I heard "aluminum heads" I knew the estimate of "a couple of hundred bucks" that I gave my wife was going to be a little off the mark!

I'm starting to see a trend. I think I'm his test bed. His first set of headers were for me and now he's trying out the heads on my engine. My original heads were cracked (again?!) and well past their useful life. I took the car home a couple of weeks ago and all I can say is "wow". She was a different car. A lot more pull than before. The work was definitely worth it....but then he had to take the car back. The car has had electrical gremlins since I bought it 7 years ago and the alternator fried for some reason on the way home. He just finished replacing it and the fuse box and I'm picking it up again tomorrow afternoon. Fortunately for me, I'm in Massachusetts too. Easy trip to make.

He mentioned he was talking to you about the work and that you and I have very similar goals for our cars. I would recommend this "upgrade" 100%. Plus, a trip to his shop is always an enjoyable experience.

WOW! Great to 'meet' you here. Yeah, he said "SOME RICH GUINEA PIG HAS HIS CAR IN HERE". Totally kidding. I thought I was the testbed! I have his headers too, and MAN are those things superb.

He said he put the John Haas fusebox in yours, which I also have (many here do) and it is a WINNER. That alone should help exorcise some demons.

Yeah, the "$200" quote might've been a little premature to tell your wife. I always fein short term memory loss, "DID I SAY TWO HUNDRED? I don't know what I was thinking... probably thinking of you oh jewel of my eye" Okay, maybe that won't work, but it can't hurt.

And TAJON, I was tempted to get the Porsche brakes for my car as he mentioned. I have an extra set of calipers from my Carrera. Wonder if he can fit those on!?! Oh well, always something.

Keep us updated on your upgrades Sean!
Just a quick note, the new Trick Flow heads have a lot of engine builders excited. I'd bet those are the heads that everyone is keeping secret.

Couple the Trick Flow heads with the Edelbrock Air Gap intake, the Lunati Voodoo cam with about 230 degrees intake duration (@ 0.050) or the Comp Cams equivalent (the XE274), a good 750 carb, flat top pistons set for 10.5:1 compression ratio and the horsepower will be in the 450 BHP ballpark. Exhaling through a good exhaust system of course.

I like the Extreme Energy/Voodoo cam profiles. But there's more tricks to be played with the camshaft. The new heads under development by Scott Cook will also raise the bar somewhat.

I got the car back last night, and took it on a drive to work this morning. Despite my not-so-enjoyable-schedule of meeting after meeting today, I would have to say it is a good day. Now I just need to stay focused and try not to daydream too much about the drive home that awaits. I'll try to post a picture tonight.
