Make that a sharp putty knife I used no solvent I just chipped away at it, cold weather is preferred to hot. Also a stiff wire brush on a grinder helps during the paint removal but wear eye protection those wires go flying off.

Les,
From other's experience, putty knives and solvent and time and labor are what is needed. Aircraft stripper followed with lacquer thinner for final clean off. THEN you will see the three million spot welds that hold the inner-outer wheelhouses together and have to deal with them before finishing. I would reccomend seeking out a LineX firm near you and have them spray it with the finest grain they can manage in black. Colors will only gather dirt and dust in the valleys and become a pain to keep clean. Show cars can go with gloss finish paint, but if you intend to use the tub and work in the engine bay, LineX will keep looking good long after paint has developed issues. You have glass, chrome, and paint all around there - I would be hesitant to jump in there with high pressure sand blasting.
Not sure I understand the bellhousing question - it is just a bellhousing like any other. Nothing special.
