External Tach Connection

I'm trying to use an external tach on my car and every time I connect it to the "-" on the coil, it bogs the engine down to the point that it stops running. Is there any other place that I can connect an external tach? I'm running a Mallory Unilite distributor with stock coil.

Apparently the tach you're trying to hook up is grounding the coil rather than only tapping or inducing a small amount of voltage to move the gauge needle. A MSD tach adapter MAY work, but I would certainly call them for advice before ordering this. Did this tach ever work on a Pantera? You could of course try it on the positive pole of the coil, but I suspect it won't work that way.....
