George,
It might be a good time for the PI website to adapt the rules that many other forums have. See example below from the RC Universe. The hot ones are; using threads, language, flaming, copyright, posting links to other websites, posting links to other websites that require registration and political stuff. I hope you will consider adopting some of these. It will make life so much easier and everyone will know what is OK and what is not.
Mike
RCUNIVERSE.COM COMMUNITY POLICIES
RCUniverse.com is dedicated to developing and maintaining a friendly online community, where members of all ages and backgrounds feel relaxed and comfortable. Like any community, RCU has certain standards. When members join our forums, they agree to abide by these rules. To remain a part of the RCU community, members must be considerate of others. Repeated violations of these guidelines set forth below may result in a member being put on moderated status or, if the violations are extreme then access may be temporarily or permanently restricted to our forums.
TOPICS OF DISCUSSION:
Although discussion forums encourage a wide range of opinions, please keep your posts focused on the topic of the thread and related to the forum you are submitting your message.
RCUniverse's chosen language is English. All other languages are subject to removal.
Each forum has a different topic, so what is appropriate in one forum or thread may not be appropriate in another.
RCUniverse.com is focused on R/C. Accordingly, topics must remain R/C related.
We do not permit political, social, religious, or other off-topic discussions. There are many places online to express your opinions on issues outside of RC so "RC" Universe is designed to be a place to talk just about RC.
DIRECT SUPPORT FORUMS
Several of our support forums are established for the purpose of receiving specific product support directly from the vendor to whom the forum is dedicated.
When a thread is started by a member in a specific direct support forum, only the company and the posting member may be involved in the conversation.
If you would like the company AND other members to post their opinions, please post your thread outside of the support forum.
If you would like to include your opinion on a support forum thread, please email or PM the member your thoughts.
All posts submitted by members other than the original thread starter will be subject to moderation.
EXCEPTION TO THE ABOVE: This rule applies ONLY to those direct support forums that indicate ONLY company responses are allowed. If such is not noted then both members & company may respond within that forum.
INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE:
The use of inappropriate, offensive language or language substitutions are not permitted on RCUniverse.com. Inappropriate or offensive language includes, but is not limited to, any language or content that is sexually oriented, sexually suggestive or abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, profane, hateful, or that contains racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable material of any kind. We ask that you please be considerate to other members in the forums when posting your messages. RCU is a place that is friendly to members of all ages and that parents know is safe for kids. We will not allow linking, mention or reference to any website or organization that contains any of the aforementioned objectionable content. Any posts or links made to websites containing such will be removed and a warning given.
HARASSMENT & FLAMING:
RCU members are not permitted to harass or "flame" other members. Please do not post or transmit any unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, profane, hateful, racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable material of any kind, including, but not limited to, any material which encourages conduct that would constitute a criminal offense, violate the rights of others, or otherwise violate any applicable local, state, national or international law. Please note that this also includes the posting of taunts on a forum solely for the purpose of demeaning that forum's topic and/or members.
COPYRIGHTED OR TRADEMARKED MATERIAL:
It is illegal to post any content that is copyrighted or trademarked, unless you hold the copyright or trademark. Any material protected by copyright may not be posted in the message boards without the expressed permission of the author or owner of the copyright on that material. This includes reproducing the full text of news stories, articles, etc. It is acceptable to provide a link to copyrighted material, to post brief excerpts, or to paraphrase other works, though we do strongly encourage you to cite the original source whenever possible.
PIRACY OR UNLAWFUL ACTIVITIES:
This community forum is a place for ideas and constructive participation, and not a place to violate any laws or to discuss illegal activities. This type of activity includes, but is not limited to, advocating or asking for information regarding software piracy or unauthorized emulators of software or hardware, sharing or distributing viruses, licenses, registration information, software keys, "cracks," or other information designed to do harm to or allow unlawful access to any computer hardware, software, networks, or any other systems. Please refrain from posting this kind of message.
POSTING ADVERTISEMENTS:
This is a forum of ideas and discussions. We do not wish to have the readers of the forums overwhelmed with advertisements but realize that posting announcements or interesting new product information is information our members want. To balance this need for information and the need to prevent spamming of ads in our forums, we will allow the following to be posted:
RCU BANNER ADVERTISERS
Allowed is one new thread per week to post new R/C related product announcements, specials, promotions, news and/or stock status. Not allowed are graphical ads in the thread.
Replies to existing threads may include whatever information is being requested, save for graphical ads.
Advertisers may not repeat same or substantially similar announcement a second time.
Shilling for a company will result in immediate membership revocation. All member fees paid to RCU will not be refunded.
ALL OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
Non-RCU advertisers may submit one new special R/C related announcement or news thread during any 30 day rolling period. Announcements include only product information or news. No ads, promotions, specials, stock status or the like will be allowed.
Commercial announcements must be made in one forum only and the forum must be applicable to the topic of the commercial announcement thread
Members may reply to these threads and vendors may follow up with answers, support or additional information.
"Build Threads" are permitted
No "sale" ads or graphical ads allowed. This is for dissemination of product announcement, specials, market research or pertinent news strictly.
No bumping is allowed. Companies should use common sense discretion when adding information so they don't aggravate their customers
Full disclosure of company affiliation is required for these posts.
Companies may answer within ongoing threads whether providing direct answers to questions about their products & support or adding pertinent product information such as specs, photos or videos for example.
Companies will refrain from posting in threads of their competitors where the subject contains another companies name or product in it.
RC Universe proven banner ads are in place for those who desire additional exposure, branding, marketing and promotion. Please seek out the advertising information RCU has available to promote your products by clicking the advertise link atop every page here on the website.
We do encourage all RCU members to let the advertisers who support RC Universe know that you "heard about them on RC Universe". Most companies track how customers find them and letting them know this is crucial so we can continue to provide all RC Universe members the best possible service.
USERNAMES & DISCLOSURE:
Only one username or account is necessary at RCU, all others will be removed. If you create a second username to act as a shill or in attempt to bypass a management ban, you will be at risk of permanent removal from RCU. A shill is defined by but not limited to the act of promoting products for vendors, products or the like, and the act of hiding behind anonymity to abuse normal membership policies and etiquette.
If you are a manufacturer, vendor, sponsored representative, retailer or the like for an r/c related company or product you must specifically identify yourself and the particular affiliation in your signature. Any member affiliated with a company not identifying themselves as such is at risk of revocation from RCU. This is identified, but not limited to a member who gains anything financially whether in cash, product, discount or the like.
Web addresses may not be used as usernames.
SPAMMING:
Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly in one or multiple forums, is prohibited. Spamming will also be defined as posting advertisements in the general discussion forums for products for sale in the swap shop.
SELLING:
All selling takes place in the RCU Marketplace which provides for free listings to non-commercial members for BOTH classifieds OR auctions. We have tools and features in our marketplace that no discussion forum can compare to. These tools help you to trade safely and more efficiently. So please use only the Marketplace to do your buying, selling and trading.
No auction, for sale or wanted posts in the forums please. No asking for bids or words that would lead the buyer to assume you are having an auction or classified ad. No ads linking to auctions or classified ads. No discussion forum posts linking to ads unless the information is answers a question being discussed. If you have an item for sale or auction elsewhere and are bound by their contract to fulfill the terms, please do not post the same item for sale at RCU. Raffles are only allowed with written permission from RCU management.
POSTING IMAGES:
Forum members are allowed to embed images in their messages by linking to an image that exists on another site or downloading it from their computer's harddrive. In addition to the copyright restrictions mentioned above, users should also refrain from embedding any images of a sexual or offensive nature. Any links to clearly offensive or pornographic materials will be removed immediately at the moderator's discretion.
POSTING LINKS:
Our policy on linking to other websites is pretty simple. Members may link to any other site that provides information that helps answer another member's question or is just of specific interest to members of that particular forum. One of the most basic tenets of the Web is the open exchange of information, and the RCU forum managers wholeheartedly support this type of exchange. Members may NOT link to sites which require registration or membership to view the content, including offsite chat room discussions.
The only other type of linking (besides porn and spam as mentioned previously above in our rules, of course) that will not be allowed on our site is when members solicit people to leave our site to a competing service. That's just common sense. We won't allow people to use our site to promote a competing service any more than a brick-and-mortar store would allow his competitor to paste flyer's all over his walls. However, people are always welcome to link to any non competing online resource in order to share useful information with fellow members.
SIGNATURES :: AVATARS :: USER TITLES
Avatars, signatures and user titles are available to present your favorite r/c item or saying to the public in every post you make. No political, social, religious, or other similar off topic will be allowed. You may not provide any information to a commercial website unless you are an RCU Banner Advertiser. As an RCU advertiser the information allowed is limited to company name, logo, insignia or website URL. No other promotional or advertising material is allowed except the information that is required by the disclosure statement.
Personal and r/c club links in the signature are acceptable as long as the website is not commercial or in any form of competition with RCU.
Any signature or avatar offensive or pornographic in materials will be removed immediately at management's discretion.
You may alter your User Title after 10 days and 10 posts. Under no circumstances may you impersonate a moderator or senior staff of RCU. These titles are earned and appointed only by RCU Administrator's.
BANNING:
RCU reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to any part of these forums. If you violate any of the rules stated in this document or any other service terms documents, a moderator will remove the offending message. It is your responsibility to maintain a current, valid email address in the registration information so that RCU management can contact you in the event of a policy violation. Any member who consistently and purposefully violates our policies will at the administrator's discretion, be denied access to these forums for a period of 1 to 30 days depending on the nature of the violation. Any member who refuses to comply with the policies of these forums will be banned permanently.
MANAGING USER CONTENT:
Members of RCU are solely responsible for all content posted under their account. It is each member's obligation and responsibility to log off at the end of their session to prevent unauthorized use of RCU and account access. RCU shall have the right, but not the obligation, to correct any errors or omissions in any content, as it may determine in its sole discretion. RCU further reserves the right to delete or remove any user content from the site and to deny the access of any member to all or part of this site, at any time for any reason without prior notice or liability.
Thread titles must reflect the full content and be fair to any person or vendor where things have been resolved. Please update the thread title by either adding the word RESOLVED to the title or re-wording the title to better reflect the situation.
PRIVATE MESSAGING:
While the topics may vary all RCU forum etiquette rules apply to private messaging. All rules that are broken via private messaging will be dealt with in the same fashion as if they were posted on the forum itself.
