I don't know what other folks here think, but I used to really like the tread pattern of the old Pilot Sports. I just found this old pic.

The new ones don't perform any worse, but they sure doen't look the same. Anyone know why they made such a drastic change? Which one do you prefer?

I guess there is a difference between what looks cool and what is functional. I don't think any lay person can look at a tread pattern and realistically determine its dynamic properties compared to another pattern. We like to think we can, but we mostly buy on what looks aggressive / cool. The tires today will outperform the tires of yesterday.

I remember the Goodyear Wingfoot, Gatorback, & old Pirelli P7, and would buy them in a heartbeat, because they looked cool, even if the performance is not as good as today's technology.
I have the old Pilots on one car and the new Pilots on another. I prefer the old tread pattern.

I remember Michelin's marketing dept plugging the virtues of the old tread design's ability to disperse water and the lack of tread blocks promoted a quieter tire. I had read most tire noise emanates from each block within the tread pattern hitting the roads surface.

Since the new block tread design is on my GT5 with unmuffled 180s, I can't speak to whether the tire is as quite as the non-block older design.
I thought both styles and even the Pilot Sport MXXX were all available concurrently? I have what is referred to as the "newer style" on my GT5 with date codes of 2006. I'm happy with them and prefer them over the chevron style for looks and performance. They are about due for renewal and in looking I see Tire Rack has the 335/35/17's for $244 ea, that is a huge price drop having paid around $400 ea. for Pilot Sports in the past.

I don't remember if the thread was different, but the old Pilots that were on the Pantera when I bought it last year were slippery, the new ones have a lot more grip. Same brand, same size. Probably just an age thing, but a problem for people like us that don't drive our cars that much, the tires go "off" long before they're worn down.
