I appreciate everyone's enthusiasm for green engines, but in my humble opinion, a sports car is not the place for it. I suppose we'll have no choice some day, and including hybrid or electric motors in sports cars will help advance technology, but I certainly wouldn't buy one.

Part of the appeal of a sports car (and specifically the Pantera) is the noise it makes. You can close your eyes, and a nasty engine being revved makes the hair stand up on your arm. The whine of an electric motor does nothing.

Perhaps the best example of this is the 24 hours of Le Mans. Diesel cars have dominated the race for the past 5-6 years. I've also stopped attending. I applaud the engineering effort that goes into developing a race-winning diesel car, and I am sure that many of the advances have trickled down onto street cars. The founders of the 24 Hour race and the ACO have always stated that the race is geared toward innovation and economy as opposed to outright entertainment, so the diesels are consistent with their philosophy. But they are missing something without the engine noise.

A race diesel sounds like a huge vacuum cleaner. I wonder if the noise is the air displaced by the car as opposed to engine noise? The engine is very quiet and just makes a "wooosh" sound. It produces absolutely no emotional reaction whatsoever.

A Ford GT with a "woosh" engine sound would still be a pretty car, but an engine that produces no emotional reaction is misplaced in a high performance sports car. It would be perfect for a luxury car, where silence is golden...

My two cents

AMEN!

Agreed with Charlie.

I appreciate the technology and would buy that type of performance in a daily driver luxury car but would pass on the GT.

The sounds and the smells are integral to my experience. Although I wonder how much of their target market feels the same? How many folks with money to burn are just looking to buy the latest cool car and couldn't care less for the sound and the fury of a gas guzzling internal combustion engine?

I take it you've seen the home built jet powered VW bug? Nice bit of engineering.
I guess most of you have seen the White Zombie electric shitbox blowing away Z06s like they're standing still. I love the smell of hot oil and metal. I never thought I'd ever be anything but a Detroit Iron guy myself. And I felt like all of you do - until I saw that power.

1000 HP. 1000 ft lbs of torque the instant you step on it. I'm sure as quiet as the motors may be, everything else must be pretty much blowing up around you to do the 1/4 mile in those kinds of times and speeds. I'm sure the feeling behind the wheel and in your gut is the same.
Where can I get a look at this White Zombie Electric Shitbox?

Thank you guys for the jet cars, but to be honest I was thinki8ng more like someone giving me the real thing. You know, so I could actually drive it myself. I mean don't think I am not gatefull for the movies and such, but boy a jet powered Pantera would be about the nicest thing anyone ever gave me, if you know what I mean?
Ford GT with electric motors.

I hope someone drills a .44 in me before I would purchase something like that. Lots of power for half an hour of running does not sound like much fun to me. Once the engineers figures out how to go long distances with electric motors without adding a lot of weight with gas motors, etc. and then that might be something.

In the near future, I really do not see anything working in this regard for a hybrid working very well.

My main point is, hybrids are not perfected yet, and to buy into something like this before they are is pure folly -- and I better not be a part of that......
