Still working on some things on my GT5S, and since my car will never see rain, next I want to change out the wiper grills smooth like this photo on my Group 4. How do you get the original grills out? Maybe they are just pressed in on the edges where you just need to pull on the outer edges??

six or eight studs - I forget.

Pull straight up. I looped flexible wire/string through a couple of slats near the edges and pulled straight up. BUT...

I fear a grill never before removed may be in so tight that slats could be broken in this manner. I knew mine had been removed during the previous owner's restoration, and they came out pretty easy.

Perhaps taping the painted area and using a putty knife blade would help with the pulling motion.

The no-holes grills were once sold by Hall - maybe still are. The stock grills are $$$, so save them. And you will have to remove most/all of your wiper system to use the no hole grills.

Good luck.

the grills are cheap castings, they have little ball ended pins that poke through white plastic eyelets inserted into holes in the cowl. the white plastic is hard after 30 years. any grease that had lubed the pins when the grills were installed is by now either dry or vanished.

I used a hook ended tool to gently pull up on my grills. the first one popped off in about 3 steps with no problems, the second one cracked & came off in 2 pieces DOH!!!! Red Face

try to locate those pins & hit them with a shot of WD40. should help tremendously.

I agree with George. Except I used the plastic banding found on pallets that are cut then thrown away. I looped the banding through the slots of the grill after lubing the pins. Try one loop on each end and one loop in the middle and for equal pressure try slipping pry bar handle or broom stick thru all three so as to lift equally. Be carefull because they can be broken.

After I got mine out I put in new plastic retainers, but I drilled them out for a wider diameter so the greased pins go in with easy effort.

Good luck,
Rodger
Spent my labor day laboring to get a "no wiper" grill in place for my GT5S to give it a cleaner look. I used a special tool to get the old grills out without breaking them, and they were really in there tight! Will show the special tool later. Here is the "before" photo with the old grill in place, and the "after" photo to follow.
