I am about to buy a 1989 GT5s. On the test drive the gear stick 'chattered' against the gate in third gear, not in any other gears. Any firm ideas ? Is this an indication of gearbox problems or selector mechanism ?
Definitely a mis-adjusted shift linkage. Once you've done it, this takes less than 5 minutes to adjust. The easy procedure is in the Owners manual and simply involves shortening/lengthening the shift rod at the transaxle end.

Thanks very much for your very quick reply Jack. It was the only thing that worried me about the car.
