The HEi is a car that I always wanted to see. According to the info that I have, there were only about a dozen built with the Hemi.

The 440 was substituted for it.

I considered lots of mid engine cars before I decided that, regardless of all of it's faults, the Pantera was the best solution.

I'm still glad that I picked the Pantera.

Me too! I don't think there is a car that can match the Pantera for:

1) Style
2) Price & Value, especially back when some of us got our cars
3) Ability to soup-up the engine
4) Availability of the vehicle
5) Availability of the parts

Thanking about what mid-engine cars a person might consider in the similar or higher class...

  • Maserati Bora - I would love one... My #1 pick after the Pantera
  • Acura NSX - I would love one... My #1 pick after the Bora
  • Maserati Merak - Never considered one - not that cool, really
  • Lambo Countach - Out of my league
  • Lambo Diablo - Never really crossed my radar screen - pretty expensive
  • Fiat X1/9 - I thought they were cool looking in high school, but FIAT didn't do it for me
  • Toyota MR2 - They looked cool, and would be reliable

A lot of these others (like the Monteverde) are too rare, or two expensive.

Doug - what were you considering?

  • I followed the development of the AMX. At some point around '69, they just gave up knowing that the Pantera was coming.

The Mangusta was on my list as well as the Lotus Europa. Particularly when the John Player special appeared with the 5 speed. It inserted itself into the list.

I had just heard stories of the Mangusta to that point, like Deano Martin (Dean Martin's son) owning one with a sun roof and bell housings getting ripped off on sewer manholes.

When I heard about the Pantera being in development but without a name, that froze me in my tracks.

When they finally started to appear, I saw several with 10 inch Campi's on the road in Rockland County. Probably 74-75. Apparently that was Grossman over in Nyack that was selling them?

He's was also racing a 427SC that I just happened to have seen being delivered by Bill Kolb, driving up Broadway and getting on the west side highway in November of '67. It was gold.

I was in college at the time and worried about staying there in light of my draft boards inability to fulfill their quotas.

Got my 68 GT350 in April of 72 which delayed the Pantera's arrival.

I do have a letter somewhere from Park Lincoln-Mercury inviting me to test drive the Pantera and offering, sight unseen, a trade with the Shelby and $5,000 for the Pantera.

I also have a dealers' order sheet for a '73 Pontiac Trans-Am 455SD 4speed, for $5200 as well as a letter from Detomaso offering a Weber set up for $780.

So it is apparent to all that examine the situation that I was conflicted. I'm so glad that has all been sorted out now? Wink
