Two things come to mind.

First it looks like a stunt man was locking up the rear brakes with the hand brake trying to swap the end around.

The other thing that comes to mind is that depending on how large the rear anti-sway bar is, if one of the front anti-sway bar links suddenly breaks, the car can snap steer which is a sudden violent over steer.

It's one of the issues with running big anti sway bars and also with running larger profile tires in the rear than in the front.

I've had it happen several times in other cars and every time it is a failed front anti-sway bar link and the rear bar was big.

None of the cars were destroyed or damaged but it will get your attention pretty fast. Other drivers look at you like you are mentally deficient. I hate that.

Classic mid-corner lift and oversteer. Keep your foot in it!

Watch the video again. He didn't lift. That is why he was shot over the edge.

There is a time and a place to keep your foot in it. Next to a cliff isn't the time to keep your foot in it. If he would have taken his foot OUT OF IT when he was travelling straight down the road (albeit, sideways) and then locked the brakes, he would have slid straight down the road, on the pavement.

Unfortunately, I did the same thing in the Pantera long ago before I learned I should stop driving like an idiot and play on the track. I also was on a curve with a cliff on the inside. The difference is I kept my foot in it until I was sliding straight down the road and then I hit the brakes, hard. Kept the car on the payvment and drove away.

Watched it again and again. I still say he lifted, even before the camera caught him, which was mid-slide. Unweighted the rear and it came around.

I agree with you though, a curve with a cliff is not the place to test cornering limits.
Sorry:
It's good that Ferrari pays attention to producing such a nice flat bottom, especially when so many end up upside down
Sorry:
Now I know why they're often red, makes them easy to find out in the wilderness

A great reminder that it takes tons of engineering and hard work to produce such a car, and only a second of stupidity/bad luck to ruin it. Drive carefully.

I work as a fireman/paramedic. That fine show of driving skill took place on or near Mulholland Hwy. in the Santa Monica Mtns.I know that area well, it is where I work. On any Sunday, we Get called to scrape up Di*k heads like this guy often. I am glad he did not take anyone out as he pulled that stupid move. Too fast and too much car for this moron. Sad that he did not get hurt real bad, Is that mean of me? Sorry I am fresh out of give a sh!t for idiots!
Yeah, I will think about what you said the next time an ass h*le takes out a family in the car he hits because he makes a "mistake" driving like a punk. If one wants to push the limits of their car, Keep it on the track so you only hurt yourself.
I hate to break this to you but all the "heros" I know feel the same way.
He's no worse than many other a holes that are out there. Just more affluent.

Spend some time in an emergency room waiting area and that will be fairly well illustrated.

I respect the opinions of first responders. Their lives are often threatened by the rescue.

I would have to say that from what I have read, the comment about the camera lens getting under the brake pedal is a pretty bad level of incompetency though.

Here, the motorcycle riders are far more dangerous that this guy was. At least this one was just a one person incident.

The motorcycles here run flat out at 14,000 rpm up the dotted lines between the cars.

It is well over 150mph, and they do it in groups.

Because it is unannounced and the speed and manor in which it is done, there isn't even police pursuit and it would be pure coincidence that a road block could or was set up.

It all depends on the level of stupidity.

This guy with the Ferrari is only about a 4 outta 10. Almost not even worth mentioning? Much, much bigger a holes here.

I would up grade that though if I heard he was on a new car test drive? Wink

As far as cars go, I do remember an incident last year where I got passed on the highway by a 911 Turbo Cabriolet at excessive, excessive, excessive speed on the right shoulder. It was like the time the F16 (or whatever it was...Tomcat?) came over the rooftops unannounced (from the Eisenhower off the south Jersey coast). Never heard him, he was just there, then gone in an instant. I could read his name on the fuselage though. Lt. So and So, and he did wave. I think he thought he knew me?

Not like the choppers coming through the trees in Nam. You could hear them coming for miles.

This is when all air traffic was grounded after 9-11.

Good thing I had fresh shorts to change into fresh out of the laundry? Smiler

Wanna' start comparing stupidity levels? Start with the married guys. How stupid is that? Eeker
I own the same model Ferrari (360) in the convertible version, and have had it on the track and many twisty roads. I can tell you 2 things about this crash: 1)He had the traction control turned off 2) He did something incredibly stupid to get that far out of shape.
These are exceptionally good handling cars with not a whole lot of torque. I would guess he hit some loose dirt. You have to try pretty hard to get them to spin like that.
If you try to drive the thing on the track with the traction control on it is incredibly obtrusive. No way he had it turned on.
Absolutely right about the brakes. They have great brakes and easily would have stopped him before going over the edge.

Well I didn't know they made a 4x4 version looks like he needed bigger tires to go off roading like a Raptor... or no I said shiney side up rubber side down.

I do have a question how was it caught on video? the person driving was as you said Mike "He did something incredibly stupid to get that far out of shape" like drifting for the camera?
