Hello, I'm hoping someone might have some sage advice on two parts I need to replace.

Ignition Switch for '74 - I need the ignition and corresponding key. Any input on best and/or lowest cost source ?

Windshield Wiper Motor for '72. I already replaced just the cable and it lasted about a month. I'm thinking about just a new complete assembly this time. Its a standard Lucas/Jaguar part. Any input on best and/or lowest cost source ?

As always - thanks guys !

Hi Tony,

Can you be more specific?

WHAT is the reason for your need?

Do you need the switch tumbler and key?

Do you need the switch housing?

Do you need the electrical portion that screws onto the rear of the housing?

Thanks for hosting the pre-Dream Machines breakfast! applause

Larry
Hi Larry, thanks.

I'm not exactly certain what I need but here are the symptoms. The key binds up and it just won't turn. After enough fiddling on every start I can eventually get it to work but its now beyond frustrating. Similarly, sometimes when it turns it seems the electrical connection is not robust. I was going to just replace the entire assembly but I guess it depends on how much the easy approach is going to cost....

Thanks again

I had a similar problem to what you're describing, and discovered after some searching that the ignition switch has a little spring inside that is supposed to hold the tumbler out until the key is fully inserted, then it slides in 1/4 inch and you can turn the key. If the spring isn't in top shape, then the tumbler can slide in early, and you won't be able to turn the key.

I gave it a blast of graphite lube, and it is much better, but not perfect, so if the tumbler slides early, I just give a slight twist to the key (to put a bit of binding pressure on the tumbler), pull back on it to bring the tumbler back out, then slide the key the rest of the way in and away it goes.

Have a quick read through what Ralph Granchelli has posted on the ignition switch, it may help ...

Or, start at the bottom of page 58 of this document, it describes how to deal with some of the idiosyncrasies of the switch...

I used to keep a straightened paperclip with a small 1/8 bend at the end on my keychain so I could pull the tumbler back up, but after the lube and a little practice, I was able to do the trick with just the key.

Hope this helps
It sounds like you just need a new ignition key switch tumbler assembly which can be found in the $50-$60 dollar range if you really hunt for them, they are found under Pantera, German built 71-73 Mercury capri's, and British Ford Tanus. Graham Pantera have them listed for $80 which may be the way to go since your time is probably worth more than the $20. Replacement is pretty straight forward, see step 11 at the Pantera place website.
