Just saw this on another forum but this mall took to some thugish tactics against some folks that gather at a coffee shop on Sunday mornings. What I don't get is that these guys spend money at the mall and they aren't hooligans. Why not work with the group to get some rules in place so both businesses and classic car guys benefit? Instead, they go straight to law suit. What a shame:

In the end its the shopping centers lot. Thuggish tactics seems overbored though, signs posted should have made it clear.

I'm guessing the lot was pretty small, and while many car guys use those businesses, its not as often as people who are actually trying to park in a small lot who came just for the business.

How they handled it though was poor. I would have just passed along to my friends not to give any business there. Make the rental space dry up and hit that strip mall company where it hurts.

wow, my attorney would have a field day with this one.

I live in the San Diego area and if I decide that it would be nice to make a short drive to the LA area in #5606, it could be an interesting morning.

Let's say I need a cup of coffee to perk me up. Somebody sees me drive up in an old classic car and throws a lawsuit at me.

If I didn't have tickets to the Chargers game this weekend (with the hope that the Bengals would be put away), that sounds like it could be a nice way to earn some extra coin.

It DOES sound as though that security has mellowed out a bit with their tactics...
Something else will pop up if the desire is there. Thats what happened when they took away the Crystal Cove event here in Southern CA. Try some big lot car dealership or similar. Our Cars & Coffee is now at Ford PAG Mazda Campus in Irvine, and it brings about 400 real nice cars each Saturday for a couple hours quickie.
Ultimately, its their property and they can make the rules (outside of thuggish tactics). I have seen some really successful weekend "car shows" that do benefit businesses (if memory serves right, even the businesses mentioned in the article were bummed; one hair cutting place started to open up early on Sundays cause she was getting a good run of business). On the other side of the coin, I guess one could reach out to the property owner, let them know what they would like to do and spec out some rules. It just all seems so draconian with the types of responses that happen. Everyone is law suit happy. These shows could be a wonderful marketing opportunity or even potential revenue stream. Anyway, just seemed like a lost opporunity.
Two of the more 'high-end' shows that I went to this past summer were held in church parking lots on week-day evenings - there are no vendors to get ruffled feathers, and the church ladies will either be selling baked goods or raffle tickets, it's a win-win. A couple of the other shows I go to more regularly (closer to home) are in tiny parking lots and I wouldn't me surprised if they shut them down.

The show with the smallest lot that I've gone to has a burger joint that gives you free rustproofing when you park on the leeward side (from the greasy smoke that kicks out chimney whenever they lower a basket of fries into the fryer).
The Cars & Coffee in Vegas has had a few problems. Customers go into the shops and complain they couldn't find a place to park, or that they had to park far away and walk past cars that weren't there to shop. As a business owner I understand. The reality (here) is that the car guys don't really shop much other than eating at the bagel place. Women that are there for sunglasses, boutiques, and tanning probably don't appreciate walking through all the knuckle draggers to get to their shops either. :-)

The nearest fire station has also made a stink about keeping fire lanes open, but that was no problem. Everyone now knows where they can't park and everyone is completely cooperative.

There is another C&C-type event (mostly muscle cars) that happens across town that supposedly has been kicked out of a place or two.

I would love to see them pull this on the little old lady that drives her 55 Chevy wagon to the Safeway to do her shopping on Sunday morning.........or me! Talk about BLATANT discrimination of the worst kind!

"You can't come here because you own a classic car".....WTFO??????!!!!! If I was standing there holding a cup of (locally purchased) coffee, or had a receipt from a restaraunt, or grocery store, I believe that gives me the right to be there as a customer.

If it only applies on Sundays and not Saturdays or M-F, that sure sounds like discrimination to me! If the security guards didn't ask everyone in the parking lot, Volvo's included to leave, that sure sounds like discrimination to me.

I would think that a wet behind the ears law school grad would be able to take on this one and eventually own a piece of the parking lot.......

If I was a business owner that was actually benefiting from the gathering, I think that I would be extremely pissed off at the land lords......

Also, if indeed the issue of people hanging until well past 10:30 was hindering the other businesses, I think that it would have behooved the organizer to urge folks to "move it along....." or go shopping! Smiler
