Seems there are always new laws being proposed that threaten the hobby. Emisions always at the top of the list. I have heard "hear say" of more proposed laws which in the long term could efect our cars in the short term could make everyon's cars much more expensive. One is requireing all cars to have gps nav like cellphones so they can be tracked. Second is all kind of safety gaurds such as not allowing the car to start if there is a flat tire.

What's the word. Any truth to any of this?

I wouldn't lose much sleep over those threats. The technology may exist, but I doubt any government would be willing to back the intrustion that a GPS tracker would mean. I'm no lawyer, but I would think that any decent civil liberty group ought to be able to successfully fight that one. I can't think of a legitimate use for tracking every driver... any more than installing a computer chip under the skin of all newborns or any other big-brother scenarios.

Would you have thought twenty years ago that your personal car would have a black box that can be used against you in a court of law?

Or seatbelt interlocks? Or non-tamper fuel systems? Or vehicle pollution control based on visual inspection instead of just tail pipe sniffing?

Would you have thought twenty years ago that a motorcycle rider could be required to wear a helmet? Or you could be ticketed for not using your car's seat belt?

Would you have thought twenty years ago that you could be strip searched just because you wanted to board an airplane?

Would you have thought twenty years ago that you could be stopped at random on your city streets by law enforcement seeking drivers under the influence?

In recent years, Northern California law enforcement entered private property and attached a tracker to an automobile, without any warrants. This enabled the tracking of the vehicle's owner, leading to his illegal 'herb' growing location and his arrest. Appeal court upheld the warrantless use of the tracker.

And haven't you been reading the newspapers lately about the warrantless wiretapping of USA citizens by their own government?

If 'they' want to force vehicles to have GPS tracking, interlock to low air pressure sensors or anything else - they will; and there isn't much you'll be able to do about it, either.

Larry (just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they aren't watching me)
The good news is that from the looks of things like, the car auctions on TV, the car shows, car races, it looks like the car world has a pretty strong voice. Stick together and voice your opinion, VOTE and maybe with all thats happening in the world these petty little laws will never come to be. My feeling dont they have something better to do like chasing terrorist or drug dealers or something ??? LOL
