I would like to introduce myself, I am Robert Garven an ex-rock drummer. I live in Ventura CA and I am seriously looking for a very nice red/black or possibly yellow/black pre-l Pantera. I have been lucky enough to have been the caretaker of a 1975 Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 for twenty years. There was even a write up on my car in the Ferrari magazine Forza:

http://www.forza-mag.com/issue...?page=1#.VHv5Covv36k

I have always loved the Detomaso's and very excited about having another V8 to add to the garage. I have spent 20 years working on the Ferrari and hoping I can find the nicest Pantera available that is fully sorted as I am not sure I have 20 more years to go! I like originality but also open to modifications especially good mechanical ones. I am one of the cool Ferrari guys having a car that no one likes but it is probably one of the best Ferrari's ever made! Hope I can find a second home here!

Thanks guys!

I have a friend which gave me a ride in a red 74 today and I am hooked. It is not that much different on the inside than my GT4 and I like that. It has good outward vision front and rear and I am sold. I think I want a red one even though I like the yellow. I am old fashioned and to me red is the Italian racing color. People always think the Ferrari is a sissy car but when I fire it up most are shocked. I was not shocked today but totally stoked on how great the engine sounds. I got lots of good advice (still absorbing more)and know what questions to ask. I am really hoping to buy one from a club member as there won't be the dealer markup and I want a car that was loved and passed on. Is there a way to add more than one attachment to these posts? Also does anyone have any comments on some of the better known dealers such as PI motorsports? You can email me, they are about 2 hours from me but think I might want to go check them out. Also if anyone hears of one i might be interested in please let me know.

here is a pic my engine. I am most proud as in the 20 years I have had my car no one has touched it except me! Thanks for making me feel welcome!

That's a cool 308 GT4.

to add more than one picture, the quick & dirty thing to do is just make multiple posts.

The other way to do it is upload the photos to an image hosting website (such as Photobucket) and then past the multiple URLs of the photos into the text of your post. The URLs must be bracketed by the html code for embedded images; i.e. ......

As you're making a post, there's a tool bar above the field you're typing the text into, the 3rd tool from the right, the green one with a white bar on the bottom can bracket your URLs for you, or Photobucket offers the URLs with the embedded image code already inserted.

There's more instructions on adding photos here: http://pantera.infopop.cc/eve/...1063156/m/5541044056

Welcome Aboard!
Thanks to All,

George Thanks, I am really excited and hope I can find a car please let any local guys know Im looking. Hi Robert, I know of you from that 'other' site, long time Fcar owner here.

Been happy owner of a few Panteras, my current one for 9 ish great years. You'll find this board immensely helpful; I was welcomed and educated all along the way as will you.

The Pantera is a fabulous car, nicely engineered though leaving a few 'owner supplied' remedies if you desire. They're super easy to mod, or leave alone. Mine is essentially stock (or could become bone stock with a set of Craftsman tools and a nice afternoon) which was my preference all along.

I think you'll find it a nice complement to the GT4. I recently got rid of both 12 cyl F cars, got a low mile 328 but have kept the Pantera through all of it. That should tell you something of the sheer driving enjoyment and ease of ownership.

No matter, welcome again, and enjoy the hunt!

Or similar psychosis!

I posted this elsewhere, but see if any others are in your stable! (BTW, 2 years ago, a guy off this board bought my Ford GT. Turns out we shared 4 cars in common!)

I just moved in, so forgive the junk strewn about.

So, to the OP, maybe we share more than just Panteras on many levels, we're all car nuts for sure.

Since a 13mm is 1/2", and most of an American engine is dismantleable with that, just use vise grips on the rest and you'll be fine. Only half kidding.

The cool thing is that they've a very forgivable engine, with BETTER access than any mid engine F car, including the new ones. Parts are plentiful and cheap. This is the Practical Man's GT40 for the street. (Please repeat that phrase to everyone you see until it becomes a household phrase.)

On the 351C the threads on the bolts are but Detomaso had some Coc-a-mami bolts made up that have metric heads on them.

If you use an SAE socket on them you will likely round over the shoulders. You need a metric socket on them. I forget what size at the moment but I want to say they are really a stupid size like 12mm but it's been a while for me on that subject.

I use stainless SAE header bolts on the engine now. A combination of 6 point hex head, and 12 point heads, depending on the location of the bolts and the difficulty in getting a socket or wrench on them.

A 12 point box wrench works best on them if you can find a way to make it work.

A ratchet wrench, extension and a socket are not the best way to get them right.
You can modify "standard" header bolts from any high performance shop with a "locating boss" in the head.

This allows much more positive engagement and alignment of the headers, and helps to prevent the bolts from backing out.

When you buy the header bolts, they come with a little allen driver to help you get the bolts installed, and then have 12 point heads on them for final tightening.

Design and Execution thanks to the master, Wade (MarkIV/4280) on this board.

See the pictures in this thread, the post is dated 17 June 2014.

Yes, replace them with modern header bolts by all means.

I recommend stainless, but this information is given to you under the presumption that you are trying to remove the ORIGINALS and are experiencing some "technical difficulties". Once they are out, you can marvel at the complexity of the engineering thought process on them and probably save them for someone who will be looking for the originals.

They are like the "horse of a different color" in the Wizard of Oz". "There's only one of 'im, and he's it!" Nothing else on this planet is like these bolts. No one even knows who made the things?
Friends,

I am still looking for the best possible Red/ Black Pre L Pantera out there. I sent an email blast when I joined but trying to get everyones attention again.
I prefer originality but tasteful modifications are acceptable to me, especially engine and cooling upgrades such as SS pipes and Tanks etc. I would
prefer a western car with excellent paint, rebuilt engine, low miles, no hood vents, flat rear deck and no rust. I am willing to pay market price for the right car.
Once again I will post pictures of the car I am looking for or one similar. It will go to a good home where it will be loved and well maintained! I am very serious!!!

I know I am asking for allot but hope my dream car is out there and one of you can help! I apologize for reposting but I won't eat till I find a car!

Sincerely

Rob Garven
Ventura, CA

Here is a sample of what I would like, pictures found online! If anyone know who owns this car I would like to talk to them!

Thanks to all who responded and have reached out to me. I am still searching for that elusive car. I was curious I joined POCA and haven't got access to their website for some reason, but their forum on has a few posts? Is this because I do not have access yet or is this is where everyone hangs out?

Rob

I have looked at many cars only a few in person but still looking for a car like 1529. The is a original car for sale at FJ but they are asking quite a bit for a car that needs more than I have total to spend. I wish I had the funds and time to resurrect this car to what it should be. But still thinking logically if I find a car that has been sorted and not sat for 45 years I may find more. I know most of you think Im a looking for a proverbial unicorn but still have hope I can find the right car. I just need something someone has loved not cast aside. I am definitely freak out by the white Pantera thread as the Ferrari has a nylon screen that would not pick up a hair but pumps high pressure 12 quarts in the pan. There is a black car on ebay which looks fantastic but it is not red and probably over the top for me but having everything rebuilt makes it desirable to me. I wish I could find that ultra rare perfect stock car like the 125K Scottsdale car but maybe there was only one...... anyway thanks in advance for any future help and I appreciate everyones comments which have been very helpful.

Hey Rob,
Many folks hang out on both the DeTomaso Mail List and this forum. And, there are some folks who only participate in one or the other.

Subscribe to the DeTomaso Mail List here:
http://poca.com/mailman/listinfo/detomaso_poca.com

Setup your preferences - I don't care for all the emails filling my inbox every day, so I turned off email notifications. Instead, I merely visit this link and view the messages by 'date' each day and read the posts that interest me.
http://poca.com/pipermail/detomaso_poca.com/

The POCA website is just the club website. There's talk of making exclusive content available to members only, such as access to indexed and searchable past newsletters, but that hasn't really happened yet. They do offer members the ability to create a photo album which has proven to be a useful feature. The 'forum' on the poca site is poorly organized and not widely used. I think there are only a handful of posts within the last couple months.

Cheers!
Garth
