I finally have a Pantera of my own! I purchased 4008 in Mobile, Alabama and had it shipped out to New Mexico. It FINALLY arrived yesterday afternoon. This thing is a BLAST! It needs a little TLC and shows a little wear but it is in really great shape.
Here is a pic of it next to our 1968 Camaro.

Thanks everyone! I have been looking at panteras and dreaming of owning one for almost 10 years now. This opportunity came up through a private party sale. I actually ended up buying the car sight unseen! It took over three weeks for the car to get here (long story and a LOT of sleepless nights) But it is here and is as described by the owner! I have one little nagging problem that I hope is an adjustment -the trans grinds into second. The seller said it started after he put in a new clutch. Any ideas?
Tom,

Waaaaahooooooo!!! Congratulations my friend!

Like Dennis said, make sure the shift linkage is smoothly shifting into every gear, and make sure your clutch is disengaging enough. Second gear synchro is a common one to wear out, but don't worry about that until you check the linkage & clutch. The ZF is a stout tranny.

I think this calls for a yippee!

CONGRATS!!!!! Big Grin

I know JUST the rush that you are feeling right now -- I got mine two weeks ago after waiting 32 years.

Just knowing that it's now all yours after waiting all that long makes it THAT much sweeter, doesn't it.

Rick

P.S. The headaches from the sleepless nights will go away with a quick run out along the backroads.....
I had my ZF rebuilt a few years ago and installed a new clutch at that time. When I got it all together, there were some shifting problems. I ended up going through the whole shift linkage. Found that I had a worn tri-union bearing (this is the big "eyelet" looking thing that the shift rod goes through...inside the engine compartment...driver's side...down on the frame below the header) and a bent long shift rod. I replaced these but things were still not quite right. I ended up getting a long throw clutch slave cylinder and new braided line. This cleared everything up.
It would be good to find out where the last owner got his clutch. If it was from a Pantera specialist, it should be fine. If it was from an auto parts store, it might not be ideal. I have been warned that the clutch needs to be slightly thinner on a Pantera than on a Mustang, etc. I don't know if it is the clutch plate or the pressure plate that is critical. Apparently the wrong clutch will drag slightly.
Maybe some other members will pipe in with more details.
Let's hope this isn't the problem.
Later, Mooso.
PanteraDreamin,

CONGRATZ! It's a wonderful feeling owning a Pantera. I've owned several Ford power cars, a 66 Shelby, 69 428CJ, 66 Hipo Mustang, etc., etc., etc. My Pantera is the funnest and gets more stares than any of my cars.

I currenly own 3382 and my 66 Fairlane 500 convertible. I have no pplan to sell either - both are fun in their own way. I guess you can say I'm a die hard Ford man...

Enjoy your new wheels!
